This pheromone consists of triglycerides, fatty acids, and hydrocarbons, and each has some marking and ovicidal activity. The fatty acid composition of the triglycerides is similar to that of edible oils, and treatment of the azuki bean with certain edible oils (200 ug/bean) could protect the beans from injury by . macu-latus, C. chlnensls, and Zabrotes subfaclatus. 

As shown in Equation 19, the substituent effects on the ovicidal activity can be separated into hydrophobic and electronic factors. There is an optimal value for hydrophobicity for the ovicidal action of this set of compounds. That the a value in Equation 19 is similar to those obtained for in vitro reactions would suggest that a common step is critical in biological as well as in vitro reactions. For the in vitro reactions, the rate-determining step is considered to be the formation of cyclic sufonium ions (40, 41). 

Chlorfenethol, prochlonol and dicofol are powerful acaricides, but they differ with respect to their spectrum of activity. Characteristic of chlorfenethol (2) is its strong ovicidal. action, while the effect of dicofol (4) is directed mainly to more developed stages. The most characteristic feature of prochlonol (3) is its rapid onset of action. Its activity against adults of Tetranychus urticae is about the same as that of dicofol (4) its residual ovicidal activity, however, proved to be markedly better. Prochlonol shows interesting plant growth stimulation, resulting in better performance of the leaves and bigger fruits (Busschots, 1967). 

Flubendiamide is most effective on larvae followed by adults, but it has no ovicidal activity. In Japan, to control greenhouse whitefly and cotton whitefly that infest vegetables and ornamentals in the greenhouse, a yellow plastic tape formulation containing pyriproxyfen was developed. The tape has been widely used as it can lower the population of whitefly for several months after installation, and the influence on natural enemies and pollinators is low, and so forth. The action mechanism in this system is that adults attracted by the yellow color touch the tape and take pyriproxyfen into the body. The hatching of oviposited eggs is strongly inhibited by ovicidal activity via adults [38, 39].
