Outpatient drug rehabilitation

There are multiple ways in which the family and friends are involved in an outpatient drug rehabilitation program. Treatment includes individual and family counseling sessions held at a clinic, school, in family court, or another location in their community (e.g., a church or town hall). In 2000, California voters approved a ballot measure that allows state courts to sentence first- and secondtime drug use offenders to rehabilitative treatment rather than jail or prison. The measure, Proposition 36 (Prop. 36), also known as the Substance Abuse and Crime Prevention Act, took effect July 1, 2001. As of March 1, 2002, more than 15,000 individuals had been referred to treatment under Prop. 36. The law mandates probation and drug abuse treatment for offenders instead of jail time. Persons sentenced under Prop. 36 are required to spend up to a year in a state-approved treatment regimen. Treatment can include outpatient care, inpatient treatment at a halfway house, psychotherapy, and drug education and prevention classes. The law applies to persons convicted of possession of amyl nitrite without a prescription. 

Dmg rehabilitation programs may be either inpatient or outpatient. Inpatient, or residential, drug programs require a patient to live at the hospital or rehab facility for a period of several weeks to several months. Outpatient programs allow patients to spend part of their day at the treatment facility, and return home at night. Nitrous oxide is rapidly eliminated from the body, and abuse of NzO alone is not associated with withdrawal. This means that a lengthy detoxification period (removal of the drug from the body) is typically not required. 

Most (62.5 percent) of public-sector treatment occurs in ambulatory settings. This means that the client doesn t spend 24 hours a day in the facifity. Over half of the admissions were ambulatory outpatient (1 to 2 hours, 1 to 2 days a week), nearly 11 percent were intensive outpatient (2 to 6 hours a day, 3 to 5 days a week), and almost 2 percent were detoxification (a period of abstinence from alcohol and other drugs to clear the system). Over 17 percent of admissions were in residential or rehabilitation facilities, where 24-hour care is provided. Of the admissions to residential or rehabilitation facihties, about half were short-term (less than 31 days) and about half were long-term (more than 31 days).
