Family courts

According to oral tradition, white men courted women of mixed race at so-called quadroon balls and negotiated the terms of their relationships with the women s families. Some men settled large sums, up to 8000, on the woman of their choice. The man generally bought her a house and agreed to set aside a certain sum for their children. The connection typically lasted several years or more. 

Today Maurcy Szpilfogel had no fatherland and no family. His two partners had been killed in the Warsaw ghetto. It was the custom of the court to swear each witness according to the oath of his own country. No one in this court knew the Polish oath. Dr. Szpilfogel could take his choice between the German and American. 

The Presiding Judge s ruling was so equivocal that, every morning for many months, we would wake up wondering whether most of the case would be thrown out of court. The door would swing back and forth the burden of proof would seem to shift, as it had, with every change of subject, as in a family quarrel. This was no normal trial.

Kingberry Court is a pseudonym for a cul de sac in which interviews were conducted between April and October 2003. These were tape-recorded and transcribed, and lasted between one and two hours. When initiating the interview, we asked to speak with the member of the household who did most of the yard work. In all but one case we were directed toward the adult male in the family. In four of the eight interviews, only the adult male was present. In three of the interviews, however, the wife also sat down with us or hovered nearby and often added her own observations, which usually confirmed the husband s opinions.

Laboratories, just like restaurants, have adopted several different models for responding to increased demand (i) the food court, (ii) the fast food restaurant and (iii) the family restaurant chain. 

Although not usual in these data, there were parents who tried completely to sever their links with their son or daughter. One mother had in fact obtained a court injunction to prevent her son from coming near her on account of the severe harassment occasioned by him. For the most part though, parents and siblings continued to try to maintain some contact and be supportive but finally at arm s length, in an attempt to reduce the negative impacts on the rest of the family. 

Informed consent must be obtained before the administration of ECT. Often, the same severity of illness that necessitates the use of ECT also impairs a patient s capacity to consent. When the patient is unable to give adequate informed consent, the clinician and the patient s family can attempt to obtain partial conservatorship from the court allowing a family member to give substituted permission (see also Chapter 2, Informed Consent ).
