By the time Haber died, Otto Hahn, acting as provisional director of his institute, had carried out the orders that Haber had resigned over. A Nazi Party member became the institute s director and, in the subsequent Nazi takeover, no other institute of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society suffered as severely as Haber s. The military planned to make the institute a center for poison gas research, and former staff members were not needed. [Pg.77]

Rosenmund, K. W. Ber. Dtsch. Chem. Ges. 1918, 51, 585. Karl Wilhelm Rosenmund was born in Berlin, Germany in 1884. He was a student of Otto Diels and received his Ph.D. in 1906. Rosenmund became professor and director of the Pharmaceutical Institute in Kiel in 1925. [Pg.510]

The next major step forward in deciphering the mechanisms of synaptic transmission occurred in the neuropharmacological studies of Henry Dale, Otto Loewi, Wilhelm Feldberg, and their colleagues. Although, as in the discovery of the synapse as an intercellular noncontinuous junction, many individuals contributed, Loewi is generally credited with the single decisive experiment. This is probably fair, since... [Pg.8]

It has not increased our funding, and the financial situation in Germany is not very rosy. Support has declined, but I don t complain because the Max Planck Society is supporting us quite well. We have had other sources of support and can t even take on more people because we re full. I m director of a division of the Institute and this is the largest division with about 80 people of whom there are about 25 Ph.D.s. This Institute is one of about 70 Max Planck Institutes in Germany, but this was the very first. Originally it was the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin from where it was moved here after World War II. Otto Hahn and Lise Meitner used to work in this Institute in Berlin. [Pg.464]

Meitner persevered, however. She eventually became a professor of physics at the school and also served as co-director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin. The other co-director at this famous research institution was Otto Hahn, the physicist with whom Meitner worked throughout most of her career. [Pg.476]

From 1917 to 1922 he was educated at the Universities of Koenigsberg, Berlin, and Munich, where he studied medicine and received a M.D. degree in 1924 at Berlin. In 1926 he was an assistant in Otto Meyerhof s laboratory at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, Berlin, and received a Ph.D. in 1927. He then went with Meyerhof to Heidelberg to conduct research on the biochemical reactions occurring in muscle. [Pg.167]
