Inert Gas Dilution. Inert gas dilution involves the use of additives that produce large volumes of noncombustible gases when the polymer is decomposed. These gases dilute the oxygen supply to the flame or dilute the fuel concentration below the flammability limit. Metal hydroxides, metal carbonates, and some nitrogen-producing compounds function in this way as flame retardants (see Flame retardants, antimony and other inorganic compounds). [Pg.465]

Other Inorganic Compounds. Alkali—metal and ammonium teUuropentathionates (Te(S203)2), have been prepared. The S2O3 group can be replaced by ethyl xanthate or diethyl dithiocyanate. [Pg.390]

While most of the earlier research was done on metals and alloys, more recently a good deal of emphasis has been placed on ceramics and other inorganic compounds, especially functional materials used for their electrical, magnetic or optical properties. A very recent collection of papers on oxides (Boulesteix 1998) illustrates this shift neatly. In the world of polymers, the concepts of phase transformations or phase equilibria do not play such a major role 1 return to this in Chapter 8. [Pg.103]

Few of the many other inorganic compounds of Ge, Sn and Pb call for special comment. Many pseudo-halogen derivatives of Sn, Pb and Pb have been reported, e.g. cyanides, azides, isocyanates, isothiocyanates, isoselenocyanates and alkoxides. ... [Pg.389]

The selenohalides and tellurohalides of both main-group elements and transition metals have been compared with the corresponding thiohalides in two extensive reviews.Other inorganic compounds of Se and Te, with bonds to N, P etc are described on pp. 783-6. [Pg.779]

The entire spectrum of inorganic fibers can be divided into two classes, based on differences in the crystallinity of the solids (Ray, 1978). Synthetic fibers have been known as man-made mineral fibers (MMMF) and manmade vitreous fibers (MMVF). But fibrous materials can be approached or divided in other ways. For example, in the Concise Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology (1985) the entry for chemical fibers includes both manmade and natural polymers, with the discussion centering on carbon-based compounds such as acetates, acrylics, and cellulose. Fibers of other inorganic compounds were not mentioned in the encyclopedia under this entry, but silica glass fibers were described under the heading Optical Fibers. ... [Pg.80]
