Organophosphate nerve agents clinical effects

Long-term effects on the human CNS after poisoning with nerve agents or organophosphate insecticides have been reported.18,82,83 These reports are based on clinical observations, which occasionally are supported by psychological studies. In general, the behavioral effects have not been permanent but have lasted weeks to several months, or possibly several years.84... 

Symptoms will depend on the dose, duration and route of exposure. Table 5.12 shows the acute effects of hydrogen cyanide inhalation. Early clinical signs may appear similar to those of nerve agent and organophosphate compounds. 

Organophosphate Ester Hydraulic Fluids. The biomarkers of effects after exposure to organophosphate ester hydraulic fluids are well established in cases of delayed neuropathy (clinical signs of peripheral neuropathy). Further study would be helpful to determine whether certain effects (such as diarrhea after oral exposure) are due to direct action of the toxic agent on the target organ or to inhibition of acetylcholinesterase at the acetylcholine nerve receptor site on the organ.
