Organometallic compounds of Main Group elements

An area of current development is the nomenclature of organometallic compounds. Organometallic compounds of Main Group elements can, to a first approximation, be considered to be derivatives of hydrides, and the methods of substitutive nomenclature can be applied. Even then, the accessibility of different oxidation states, as with phosphorus(iii) and phosphorus(v), introduces complications. Transition metal organometallic compounds are even more difficult to treat, and the development of a unified, self-consistent and accepted and applied nomenclature is not easy. Witness the different ways (k, t and italicised symbols) for denoting donor atoms in ligands.

Apart from the now defunct journal, Organometallics in Chemical Synthesis (D6), three other regular publications (F15-F17) contain a proportion of papers and review articles on organometallic compounds of Main Group elements. 

Much attention is also paid to the hypervalency in the organometallic compounds of main group elements (Si, P, S) because of their high reactivities and structural interest. They are not described in this chapter, but will be discussed in Chapter 17. 

Oxidative addition of aryl (or vinyl) halide to Pd(0) precursor forms the monoarylpalladium complex that is the common intermediate in the catalytic cross-coupling reactions of haloarene with organometallic compounds of main group elements such as Mg, Si, and Sn. Alkynylcopper, formed from alkyne, Cu(I) salt and base in the reaction mixture, transfers the ligand to the above Pd complex, giving an intermediate complex with aryl (or vinyl) and alkynyl ligands bonded to Pd. Reductive elimination of arylacetylene (or enyne) occurs... 

There are a number of reactions known involving metal alkoxides and organometallic compounds of main group elements (Li, Mg, Al, Sn, or Zn). The fundamental reaction generally involves elimination of a main group metal alkoxide. The composition of the reaction products is considerably influenced by (i) the nature and chemistry of the reactants as well as their stoichiometry, (ii) the reaction conditions, and (iii) the presence of other reactive substrates in the reaction medium. Some typical reactions are illustrated by Eqs (2.301)-(2.319).

Whereas discrete low oxidation state compounds of the transition metals are common in organometallic chemistry, the most typical series of examples being the transition metal carbonyl compounds see Carbonyl Compound), there are at present significantly fewer classes of compounds containing main group elements in low oxidation states.
