CHAPTER 12 Organometallic Compounds of the Main Group Elements... 

In this chapter, we have briefly surveyed the chemistry of organometallic compounds of some of the main group elements. Additional aspects of organometallic chemistry will be illustrated in Chapters 14 and 15, especially for the nonmetallic elements in these groups. Organometallic chemistry is a vast and important area, the relevance of which can be appreciated only by consulting additional references. 

This monograph contains enthalpies of formation, heat capacities, entropies, and metal-ligand bond dissociation enthalpies of organometallic compounds of transition and main group elements. 

An area of current development is the nomenclature of organometallic compounds. Organometallic compounds of Main Group elements can, to a first approximation, be considered to be derivatives of hydrides, and the methods of substitutive nomenclature can be applied. Even then, the accessibility of different oxidation states, as with phosphorus(iii) and phosphorus(v), introduces complications. Transition metal organometallic compounds are even more difficult to treat, and the development of a unified, self-consistent and accepted and applied nomenclature is not easy. Witness the different ways (k, t and italicised symbols) for denoting donor atoms in ligands. 

Contrary to the rich organometallic chemistry of cyclopropylacetylenes with main group elements, tr-bonded transition metal complexes of the alkynes are rare. Nevertheless, the single example given in the literature is of a stable crystalline compound, which permits insight into the structure of cyclopropylethynyl complexes in the solid state. 

Essentially similar methods can be employed to prepare non-homoleptic organometallic compounds of the Main Group elements, EXmR etc. Some procedures unique to particular classes of compound are important, for example the mercuration of aromatic hydrocarbons by mercuric acetate ...
