Organolead compounds industrial

Organolead compounds have been handled quite safely in industry for many years. As in the case of inorganic lead, control measures are well defined, and if they are properly applied, neither inorganic nor organic lead intoxication should develop. 

The massive use of lead in kitchen utensils and water pipes goes back to the period of the Roman Empire. Later on, the industrial revolution promoted its use on a global scale. However, it was the discovery of the antiknocking properties of the organolead compounds and the fast development of the auto industry in the last century that turned lead contamination... 

In addition to organotin compounds, the survey work [199] mentions organolead compounds, recommended as stabilizers of chlorine-containing high-molecular compounds - hydroxides of triallqrl- and tri-aryllead, allq/ 1- and aryllead salts of aliphatic acids, and triethyllead hexylmaleate. Alkyl- and arylplumbanes have not foimd wide use in the plastics industry on account of their high toxicity. 

Organolead compounds are prepared industrially by an electrolysis process. As the alloy process is the first synthetic reaction of organolead compounds, found by Lowig [1], Shapiro named it the Lowig process at the Symposium of Metal-Organic Compounds in 1957 [8]. It is the reaction of a sodium-lead alloy with organic halides. 

Emission from the production of R4Pb.— It has been estimated that 11% (1,900 tons) of the total annual lead emissions from industries in the U.S.A. in 1970 resulted from the processing of gasoline additives at the six manufacturing plants cmrently in operation (Davis 1973), but the amounts of organolead compounds were not reported.
