Eigen s theory describes the self-organisation of biological macromolecules on the basis of kinetic considerations and mathematical formulations, which are in turn based on the thermodynamics of irreversible systems. Evolutionary processes are irreversibly linked to the flow of time. Classical thermodynamics alone cannot describe them but must be extended to include irreversible processes, which take account of the arrow of time (see Sect. 9.2). Eigen s theory is based on two vital concepts ... 

A hypercycle is a more complex organisation form. Its precondition is the presence of several RNA quasi-species which are able to amalgamate chemically with certain proteins (enzymes or their precursors). If such a protein is linked to a quasi-species, the resulting duo favours the replication of a second quasispecies. According to Dyson, the linked populations get stuck in a stable equilibrium. Problems occur at this level Any theory on the origin of replication has the central problem that the replication process must occur perfectly in order to ensure survival . If there are replication errors, these will increase from generation to generation, until the system collapses the error catastrophe has then occurred ... 

Freeman Dyson considers that any theory on the origin of life which begins with cooperative organisation in a large population of molecules, and makes no provision for short circuits in the metabolic pathways, will be met by the criticism just described (Dyson, 1985). 

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, chemists had so successfully isolated the elements that John Dalton was able to put together a genuine atomic theory. Dmitri Mendeleyev organised the elements into his periodic table, the culmination of scientific elegance.

The point is that this approach ignores the distinctive feature of the bi-molecular process - its non-equilibrium character. The fundamental result known in the theory of non-equilibrium systems [2, 3] is that they tend to become self-organised to a degree which could be characterised by the joint correlation functions, Xv(r, t) and Y(r, t). The idea to use n t)r as a small parameter were right, unless there are no other distinctive parameters of the same dimension as tq.
