Organic Type

The compression set of sihcone mbber is similar to organic types of mbber at low (0—50°C) temperatures, ranging from 5 to 15% (380). Above 50°C, sihcone mbber is superior, but compression set increases with time and temperature. Sihcone mbber is more tear-sensitive than butyl mbber, and the degree of sensitivity is a function of filler size and dispersion, cross-link density, and curing conditions. The electrical properties of sihcone mbber are generally superior to organic mbbers and are retained over a temperature range from —50 to 250°C (51). Typical electrical values for a heat-cured sihcone mbber are shown in Table 9. 

In the case of inorganic solutes we are concerned largely with samples in aqueous solution so that it is necessary to produce substances, such as neutral metal chelates and ion-association complexes, which are capable of extraction into organic solvents. For organic solutes, however, the extraction system may sometimes involve two immiscible organic solvents rather than the aqueous-organic type of extraction. 

In addition to their concern regarding spray residues of the lead arsenate and organic types, canners whose fruits are sprayed with lime sulfur have reason for concern over the presence of sulfur in their canned products. The presence of elemental sulfur or simple compounds of reduced sulfur in canned foods, especially in those products having an acid character, is objectionable, not only because it may be the source of sulfide flavor and staining, but also because it may actively accelerate the formation of hydrogen by the corrosive action of the product on the container. 

The usual adult oral dose of cyclosporine ranges from 4 to 18 mg/kg per day in two divided doses.11 Appropriate selection of the starting dose usually depends on the organ type, the patient s preexisting disease states, and other concomitant immunosuppressive agents used. The most commonly used corticosteroids are methylpred-nisolone (IV and oral) and prednisone (oral), although prednisolone and dexamethasone also have been shown to be effective for organ transplantation. Corticosteroid doses vary by center-specific protocols, organ type, and patient characteristics. A typical taper would include an IV 100 to 500 mg bolus of methylprednisolone at the time of transplant and then a taper over 5 to 7 days to a maintenance dose of prednisone 20 mg/day or complete cessation.2,7 It is important for practitioners to know that approximately 4 mg methylprednisolone is equivalent to 5 mg prednisone and 0.75 mg dexamethasone.11 At most transplant centers, therapeutic drug monitoring of corticosteroids is not employed. Corticosteroids are associated with a variety of acute and chronic toxicides. The most common adverse events have been summarized in Table 52-5. 

The trend from heavy metal and phenolic based biocides, e.g. mercury and pentachlorophenol types, to more environmentally acceptable but less persistent organic types, requires more attention to plant hygiene (Figure 6, Briggs, 1980). 

Pharmacodynamic studies deal more specifically with how the drug brings about its characteristic effects. Emphasis in such studies is often placed upon how a drug interacts with a cell/organ type, the effects and side effects it induces, and observed dose-response curves.

According to one dictionary definition, the term biodegrade means "to reduce to a lower organic type". As used by us in this text, to be biodegraded means that organic molecules are broken apart by normal reaction pathways present in the environment to smaller molecules that can be assimilated into the environment without harm to the environment. 

In addition to the pore size-particle size retention relationship problems mentioned above, other factors can influence a filter medium s retention characteristics. Absorptive retention can be influenced by the organism size, organism population, pore size of the medium, pH of the filtrate, ionic strength, surface tension, and organic content. Operational parameters can also influence retention, such as flow rate, salt concentration, viscosity, temperature, filtration duration, filtration pressure, membrane thickness, organism type, and filter medium area [52,53]. 

If organic-type double bonds are present in the chain, an additional influence will be exerted by the cis-trans barrier imposed by the pK-pK double bond.
