After his return he lived on his inherited wealth and did research work in his private lahoratory. He participated in the Curie couple s research by doing rectrometric measurements, he studied high-temperature reactions, and, in the field of organic chemistry, ethers and ter penes (Etard 1904). [Pg.68]

Organometallic compounds of copper were known for a long time before their versatil ity in synthetic organic chemistry was fully appreciated The most useful ones are the lithium dialkylcuprates which result when a copper(I) halide reacts with two equivalents of an alkyllithium in diethyl ether or tetrahydrofuran... [Pg.602]

The next several chapters deal with the chemistry of various oxygen containing func tional groups The interplay of these important classes of compounds—alcohols ethers aldehydes ketones carboxylic acids and derivatives of carboxylic acids— IS fundamental to organic chemistry and biochemistry... [Pg.623]

In addition to its uses in photography and medicine, iodine and its compounds have been much exploited in volumetric analysis (iodometry and iodimetry, p. 864). Organoiodine compounds have also played a notable part in the development of synthetic organic chemistry, being the first compounds used in A. W. von Hofmann s alkylation of amines (1850), A. W. Williamson s synthesis of ethers (1851), A. Wurtz s coupling reactions (1855) and V. Grignard s reagents (1900). [Pg.794]

Nucleophilic substitution of the halogen atom of halogenomethylisoxazoles proceeds readily this reaction does not differ essentially from that of benzyl halides. One should note the successful hydrolysis of 4-chloromethyl- and 4-(chlorobenzyl)-isoxazoles by freshly precipitated lead oxide, a reagent seldom used in organic chemistry. Other halides, ethers, and esters of the isoxazole series have been obtained from 3- and 4-halogenomethylisoxazoles, and 3-chloro-methylisoxazole has been reported in the Arbuzov rearrangement. Panizzi has used dichloromethylisoxazole derivatives to synthesize isoxazole-3- and isoxazole-5-aldehydes/ ... [Pg.393]

Constitutional isomerism is not limited to alkanes—it occurs widely throughout organic chemistry. Constitutional isomers may have different carbon skeletons (as in isobutane and butane), different functional groups (as in ethanol and dimethyl ether), or different locations of a functional group along the chain (as in isopropylamine and propylamine). Regardless of the reason for the isomerism, constitutional isomers are always different compounds with different properties, but with the same formula. [Pg.81]

Alkyl halides are encountered less frequently than their oxygen-containing relatives alcohols and ethers, but some of the kinds of reactions they undergo—nucleophilic substitutions and eliminations—are encountered frequently. Thus, alkyl halide chemistry acts as a relatively simple model for many mechanistically similar but structurally more complex reactions found in biornolecules. We ll begin in this chapter with a look at how to name and prepare alkyl halides, and we ll see several of their reactions. Then in the following chapter, we ll make a detailed study of the substitution and elimination reactions of alkyl halides—two of the most important and well-studied reaction types in organic chemistry. [Pg.333]

Ethers are unreactive to many reagents used in organic chemistry, a property that accounts for their wide use as reaction solvents. Halogens, dilute acids, bases, and nucleophiles have no effect on most ethers. In fact, ethers undergo only one reaction of general use—they are cleaved by strong acids. Aqueous HBr and HI both work well, but HCl does not cleave ethers. [Pg.657]

Several reports regarding the directed evolution of enantioselective epoxide hydrolases (EHs) have appeared [23,57-59]. These enzymes constitute important catalysts in synthetic organic chemistry [4,60]. The first two reported studies concern the Aspergillus niger epoxide hydrolase (ANEH) [57,58]. Initial attempts were made to enhance the enantioselectivity of the AN E H -catalyzed hydrolytic kinetic resolution of glycidyl phenyl ether (rac-19). The WT leads to an Evalue of only 4.6 in favor of (S)-20 (see Scheme 2.4) [58]. [Pg.41]
