Orange juice consumption

There is much that can be said in favor of the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables in the daily diet. In much of the world, citrus is consumed primarily as the fresh fruit, but in the United States processed products are consumed as the major source of citrus in the diet. The main staple of processed citrus juices in the U.S. is frozen concentrated orange juice (FCOJ). 

Frozen concentrated orange juice began to capture a real segment of the citrus market in 1948, and since then, its presence has been a dominant contributing factor to the increasing per capita consumption of citrus juices worldwide. 

Frozen concentrated orange juice (FCOJ) is by far the most widely distributed of the processed citrus products. First marketed in the mid-1940 s, it has grown in consumer acceptance until the present day, and to the point where its volume consumption exceeds the combined total for all other processed citrus products. 

Fexofenadine and digoxin are both well-known substrates for OATP transport, though the relative contribution of OATP modulation on drug interactions involving these two agents is unclear, since both are also P-gp substrates. The 60-80% reduction in fexofenadine bioavailability that results from orange, apple, and grapefruit juice consumption, however, is likely the result of OATP inhibition, rather than of P-gp induction (94). 

Orange juice The Russians claim that the outstanding performances of their athletes in the 1960 Olympics in Rome were due in part to the consumption of liberal amounts of orange juice, which is rich in potassium (an essential electrolyte) and vitamin C. They won more gold medals than any other country. However, it is still uncertain whether orange juice is an ergogenic food.

It seems likely that the fact that consumption of citrus fruits could cure scurvy was known or suggested very early on. Winslow and Duran-Reynals have quoted a thirteenth century Spanish medical tract recommending orange and lemon juice as being beneficial to scurvy sufferers. Similar statements are to be found over the next four centuries, but were not widely available, nor does there appear to have been a custom of widely reading the works of medical experts elsewhere in the world, even when they were available. It took an incredibly long time for something which seems obvious today to become accepted by the medical establishment.
