Ophthalmic therapeutics injections

Small-volume injectables can be therapeutic injections, ophthalmics, diagnostics, radiopharmaceuticals, or allergenic extracts. The active ingredients can be intended for human or animal therapy and can be small molecules, proteins and other large molecules, biologies, vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, antisense oligonucleotides, and, in the future, genes. [Pg.1266]

The therapeutic use of botulinum toxin for ophthalmic purposes and for local muscle spasm was mentioned in Chapter 6. Local facial injections of botulinum toxin are widely used for the short-term treatment (1-3 months per treatment) of wrinkles associated with aging around the eyes and mouth. Local injection of botulinum toxin has also become a useful treatment for generalized spastic disorders (eg, cerebral palsy). Most clinical studies to date have involved administration in one or two limbs, and the benefits appear to persist for weeks to several months after a single treatment. Most studies have used type A botulinum toxin, but type is also available. [Pg.594]

Sustained delivery of ophthalmic medications is a novel approach in treating chronic intraocular infections in conditions where systemic administration is accompanied by undesirable side-effects and repeated intravitreal injections carry the risk of infection. The administration of medications by implants or depot devices is a very rapidly developing technology in ocular therapeutics. The various types of implant and mechanisms of drug release have been discussed in general in Chapter 4. [Pg.316]
