Slurry Bubble Column Reactors As in the case of gas-liquid slurry agitated reactors, bubble column reactors may also be used when solids are present. Most issues associated with multiphase bubble columns are analogous to the gas-liquid bubble columns. In addition, the gas flow and/or the liquid flow have to be sufficient to maintain the solid phase suspended. In the case of a bubble column fermenter, the sparged oxygen is partly used to grow biomass that serves as the catalyst in the system. Many bubble columns operate in semibatch mode with gas sparged continuously and liquid and catalyst in batch mode. [Pg.56]

Selectivity control continues to be a critical issue in Fischer-Tropsch chemistry, a catalytic process that dates back more than seventy years [1]. Operating conditions can be adjusted to control selectivities but overall effects are limited [2-4]. During Fischer-Tropsch synthesis with conventional bulk iron catalysts, various phases, including metal, metal carbides and metal oxides are present at steady-state catalytic conditions [5-7]. [Pg.339]

Autosamplers work using the same switching valve principles as the manual system. A metered syringe draws a sample through a needle into a loop, the rotor turns against the stator face, and the sample is flushed onto the column. Carryover of the sample from the needle and from the switching valve can be an issue. Many manufacturers now operate a continuous flow system whereby mobile phase is continually pumped through the loop and sample needle when the system is operational. [Pg.71]
