Other Energy Systems. Chemical plants usually require cooling water, compressed air, and fuel distribution systems. Sometimes also included are refrigeration, pressurized hot water, or specialized heat-transfer fluids such as Therrninol Hquid or condensing vapor. Each of these systems serves the process and reflabiUty is the most important characteristic. Thus a project in any of them that achieves a 10% reduction in energy cost at the expense of a 1% loss of rehabihty loses money for the operation. [Pg.228]

At the central platform, water and hydrocarbon liquids are first removed in knockout drums. Then saturated natural gas, free of any liquid droplets, enters the twin expanders. The gas is cooled below its dewpoint, allowing heavy hydrocarbon components and water vapor to condense in the discharge stream. Evaporative Cooling of the Turbine. Traditional evaporative coolers that use media for evaporation of the water have been widely used in the gas turbine industry over the years, especially in hot climates with low humidity areas. The low capital cost, installation, and operating costs make it attractive for many turbine-operating scenarios. Evaporation coolers consist of water being sprayed over the media blocks, which are made of fibrous corrugated material. The airflow through these media blocks, evaporates the water, as water evaporates, it consumes about 1059 BTU (1117kJ) (latent heat of vaporization) at 60 °F (15 °C). In the above example, 1 lb of initial steam should evaporate approximately 1 lb of water in each of the effects A, B and C. In practice however, the evaporation per pound of initial steam, even for a fixed number of effects operated in series, varies widely with conditions, and is best predicted by means of a heat balance.This brings us to the term heat economy. The heat economy of such a system must not be confused with the evaporative capacity of one of the effects. If operated with steam at 220 "F in the heating space and 26 in. vacuum in its vapor space, effect A will evaporate as much water (nearly) as all three effects costing nearly three times its much but it will require approximately three times as much steam and cooling water. The capacity of one or more effects in series is directly proportional to the difference between the condensing temperature of the steam supplied, and the temperature of the boiling solution in the last effect, but also to the overall coefficient of heat transfer from steam to solution. If these factors remain constant, the capacity of one effect is the same as a combination of three effects. [Pg.116]

The utilities required for steam jet refrigeration operation often determine the selection of these units, between manufacturers and between types of refrigeration. As the chilled water temperature off of the unit approaches 32°F, the cost of the basic unit and its steam and cooling water requirements rise rapidly. [Pg.295]

Dispersible silicone emulsions are generally preferred for aqueous systems, whereas silicone fluids and compounds are preferred for non-aqueous systems. Silicones are widely employed in cooling water treatment programs, less so in boiler plants because of higher operating costs than available alternatives, but also because of sometimes questionable emulsion stability at higher temperatures. [Pg.554]
