Online resource sites

An Internet magazine featuring an extensive index of plastic industiy Web sites technology and business content and online resources for plastic professionals. 

Any listing of World Wide Web online resources becomes obsolete and incomplete as soon as it is written down. Sites come and go daily, probably hourly or by the millisecond. Two web-based lists of lists that might be helpful are found at http //www.chem.ucla.edu/VL/InfoRes.html (a list of information resources for biologists and chemists) and http //www.chem.ucla.edu/ VL/Commercial.html (a list of WWW Chemistry Sites at Commercial Organizations). 

Peterson s (www.petersons.com) is a leading provider of education information and advice, with books and online resources focusing on education search, test preparation, and financial aid. Its Web site offers searchable databases and interactive tools for contacting educational institutions, online practice tests and instruction, and planning tools for securing financial aid. Peterson s serves 110 million education consumers annually. 

From a professor of mathematics comes Cynthia Lomus Fun Mathematics Lessons (www.math.rice.edu/ lanius/Lessons/index.html), a wonderful collection of creative, practical activities. These lessons address topics ranging from basic math up to calculus and fractals. Whether it s a problem that uses pizza to talk about fractions, or one that teaches math through mapmaking, you and your child will both appreciate the engaging, straightforward tone of the site. Notes for teachers and extensive links to online resources are also available. 

IN CHAPTER l,you learned how to build a network and use your resources to land an interview. By now, you ve probably seen several promising help-wanted ads, searched online career sites, visited your college career center, and done lots of networking. You ve undoubtedly sent many, many resumes and posted your resume online, as well. Hopefully, you ve landed af least one interview by now, and maybe many more. If you re still having trouble obtaining interviews, you might want to review the material in Chapter 1.

The Uvex Culture of Safety online resource center is available to help improve safety among industrial workforces. Home to the world s top-selling protective eyewear brand, the Uvex Web site now includes new tools, tips and expert insights from Uvex and other recognized industiy leaders, making it easier for executives, safety managers and employees in eveiy workplace to achieve a culture of safety. 

With a book, the contents should be checked for an index, a table of contents, a preface, and special instructions that may be entitled How to use this source. A site map or help section in an online resource serves a similar purpose. It should be noted that many online databases may be limited to a set group of subscribers, depending upon the license agreements, while others may be accessed for free. One element that is essential and common to most systems is that instructions should be understood before plunging into the contents, whether a book, a catalog, an index, an encyclopedia, or in searching online. 

Prof. Hirst has a strong interest in promoting the field of soft matter and its importance to students, scientists, and the public. In 2008, she founded Soft Matter World (http //www. softmatterworld.org), a Web site dedicated to the soft matter scientific community. Through this online resource, students and researchers are able to discover soft matter research groups around the world and keep up with the latest in conferences, research, and career opportunities.

The Web sites for online MCS support groups, e-mail lists, news-groups and chat rooms change from time to time. Those listed here were current at the time of publication. The best way to locate online support is to visit MCS-related Web sites that provide links. The Washington State MCS Network and the Environmental Health Network (see Miscellaneous Resources below) are two examples.

As the variety of commercially available ELISA kits grows seemingly every day, so does the availability of Web sites and technical data sheets available to the researcher. There are many excellent sites available and the ones we often use include, but are not limited to, those of CHEMICON International, BD Biosciences, Protocol Online, and Invitrogen. Additionally, very helpful resources for any laboratory are the volumes of Current Protocols such as Current Protocols in Molecular Biology and Current Protocols in Cell Biology.
