On Being Stoned A Psychological Study of Marijuana intoxication. Palo Alto, Calif. Science Behavior Books, 1971. [Pg.280]

Probably the most relevant study to date about what might be considered "typical pot experience was made by Dr. Charles Tart and reported in his book On Being Stoned. Tart conducted his research by leaving questionnaires at various locations near where he was working, requesting that they be filled out anonymously and returned. His book is an evaluation of the first 150 completed questionnaires that passed his test for validity (a consistency on... [Pg.295]

Yes, I say, gazing up at the tower. Here, if anywhere, Anthony should be the echo of the slam of a door, the clank and stench of a bucket, a wisp of candle smoke, the shadow of a bent head cast on a stone wall as he writes. [Pg.353]

The most important and most particular biological activity is that by microorganisms which concentrate by preference on surface stones and rocks, where they are called lithophytes. The number of these micro-biota in various deserts throughout the world is in the order of 103 to 106 per gram of soil, and in the Sahara alone French microbiologists have described more than 45 types of cyanophyceae, 70 chlorophyceae, 90 lichens and more than 300 diatoms. Hence, deserts cannot be considered an a-biotic environment. [Pg.33]

FIGURE 1.1 In Glasgow, Scotland, and other cities throughout the British Isles, evidence of former air pollution from the burning of coal for heat in the late 19th century can still be observed on many stone buildings. [Pg.2]

As I disembarked, I heard the clock in the Piazza chime midnight. I set off toward the church like a ghost, for my boots made little sound on the stones and I had brought a half-lantern, rather than a torch, so its glow lit the pavement below me and not my face. Carnival is a bad time to wander the streets alone, for the riotous gangs of revelers can be dangerous. Almost every window was dark and I met no one except a quartet of merrymakers, fortunately all too dmnk and aroused even to notice me. They... [Pg.69]

Polymer coatings on stiffer substrates can be measured by time-resolved techniques (Sinton et al. 1989). Often in these cases it is not convenient to measure a direct reflection from an uncoated part of the substrate at more or less the same time, and anyway the substrate may not be flat, but this may not matter if it can be assumed that either the thickness or the longitudinal velocity of the coating does not vary. The time interval between the echoes from the top and bottom surfaces of the coating can then be used to determine the unknown quantity. An example of the kind of signal that can be obtained is shown in Fig. 10.5. The specimen was a coating of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) 15 m thick on a stone-finish rolled steel substrate. Although there is some overlap of the two echoes, there is no difficulty in... [Pg.205]

Several days later, Natividad Rosa brought us a whole basket of leaves, for which she was paid fifty pesos. The business seemed to have been discussed, for two other women brought us further quantities of leaves. As it was known that the expressed juice of the leaves is drunk in the ceremony, and this must therefore contain the active principle, the fresh leaves were crushed on a stone plate, squeezed out in a cloth, the juice diluted with alcohol as a preservative, and decanted into flasks in order to be studied later in the laboratory in Basel. I was assisted in this work by an Indian girl, who was accustomed to dealing with the stone plate, the metate, on which the Indians since ancient times have ground their corn by hand. [Pg.311]

The claim of the patentee is simply confined to the use of gum-arabic mixed with sugar, and of soap for removing the unchanged coating, and depositing an insoluble saponaceous film on the stone, that enables tho latter to combine with the ink. All tho other ingredients may be modified ns to quantity at pleasure. [Pg.709]

By means of such coefficients, it is possible to calculate what die friction will be between two bodies, as a wooden sill on a stone foundation, when the force pressing them together is given. [Pg.685]

An excellent example comes from marijuana use. Most marijuana smokers have to learn how to achieve the d-ASC we refer to as marijuana intoxication or being stoned. Typically, the first few times a person smokes marijuana, he feels an occasional isolated effect like tingling, but the overall pattern of his consciousness stays quite ordinary and he usually wonders why others make so much fuss about a drug that has so little effect, with the assistance of more experienced drug users, who suggest he focus his attention on certain kinds of happenings or try to have certain specified kinds of experiences, additional... [Pg.145]
