Oligosaccharide composition

The introduction of g.l.c. for oligosaccharide analysis constituted a major breakthrough in the field. In addition to strategies for accurate and sensitive quantitation of monosaccharide type (19,20), chiral procedures may be adopted for enantiomeric (d and l) determination (21). The sensitivity of h.p.a.e. chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection now provides an alternative to g.l.c. for oligosaccharide compositional analysis (22).

Karr-Lilienthal et al. (2005) reported differences in proximate and oligosaccharide composition, respectively, in SBM samples collected at 55 U.S. SB processing plants in different maturity zones. Unfortunately, no specific data are available evaluating the effects of SB genetics or the combination of genetics and growth conditions on carbohydrate digestibility.

Moreover, since the application of a particular starch hydrolysate product depends on its molecular weight (distribution) and/or oligosaccharide composition, analyses of these materials are a necessity to the applications chemist whilst the health and nutrition conscious public demands quantitative determination of carbohydrates in food.
