In spite of some attempts to answer this question, the results are not clear. It seems that, in principle, it is possible to transfer intact inclusion complex ions to the gas phase, but, as stated above, any individual case requires careful examination. One possible method of solving this problem consists in a comparison between CyDs and linear oligosaccharides as host molecules for the same guest. If the complex ion is observed with similar abundance for both CyD and the linear ligand, which cannot form an inclusion complex typical of a CyD, there is a good chance that nonspecific complexation dominates for the CyD also.
