Relative viscosities of modified oligomers, determined by viscosimetry technique, are somewhat higher than the values of the respective initial oligomers (Table 5). The observed phenomenon allows to believe, that in the interaction of oligomers with phenols and element sulfur there occurs an increase in molecular weight due to the functionalised product generated. [Pg.58]

B-DNA need not be symmetric, as seen for AT, which means that this particular simulation is not going in a straight path from B-DNA to A-DNA. It should also be noted that most of the structures of DNA oligomers determined by NMR tend to have a conformation that is neither A- nor B-DNA, hut exhibit characteristics of both kinds of helices [104,105]. [Pg.390]

The surface characterization of a polymer particle involves investigating the adsorption of ions and amphiphilic molecules (emulsifiers, oligomers), determining the number of covalently bonded functional groups and acquiring information on the structure of the interfadal layer (swollen state or hairy layers ). Presently this task can not be solved satisfactorily. The main methods used are titrimetric analyses on purified dispersions, soap titration and electrokinetics. [Pg.54]

At the beginning of a project, the model system must be determined. Oligomers can be used to model properties that are a function of local regions of the chain only. Simulations of a single polymer strand can be used to determine the tendency to fold in various manners and to hnd mean end-to-end distances and other properties generally considered the properties of a single mol-... [Pg.309]

Polymers can be crystalline, but may not be easy to crystallize. Computational studies can be used to predict whether a polymer is likely to crystallize readily. One reason polymers fail to crystallize is that there may be many conformers with similar energies and thus little thermodynamic driving force toward an ordered conformation. Calculations of possible conformations of a short oligomer can be used to determine the difference in energy between the most stable conformer and other low-energy conformers. [Pg.311]

Polyester composition can be determined by hydrolytic depolymerization followed by gas chromatography (28) to analyze for monomers, comonomers, oligomers, and other components including side-reaction products (ie, DEG, vinyl groups, aldehydes), plasticizers, and finishes. Mass spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy can provide valuable composition information, including end group analysis (47,101,102). X-ray fluorescence is commonly used to determine metals content of polymers, from sources including catalysts, delusterants, or tracer materials added for fiber identification purposes (28,102,103). [Pg.332]

Other PDMS—sihca-based hybrids have been reported (16,17) and related to the ceramer hybrids (10—12,17). Using differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and saxs, the microstmcture of these PDMS hybrids was determined to be microphase-separated, in that the polysiUcate domains (of ca 3 nm in diameter) behave as network cross-link junctions dispersed within the PDMS oligomer-rich phase. The distance between these... [Pg.328]

Linear polymers are the most commonly found, and consist of chains of D units endblocked by a variety of functionalized M units. Branched-chain silicones consist mainly of D units, with a D unit being replaced by a T or a Q unit at each point of branching. Cyclic PDMS oligomers are also common and can play a role in adhesion. They are usually found as mixtures of structures going from three siloxy units, to four, five, and higher siloxy units. A whole range of analytical techniques can determine the detailed molecular structures of these materials [20,21],... [Pg.680]

There are different reasons to discard a column a column can be damaged by irreversible adsorption of reactive polymer samples. Small amounts of styrene oligomers are known to permanently elute from styrene-divinylbenzene materials with tetrahydrofuran as the eluent, which means a continuous shear degradation of the separation material and consequently a decrease of the packing quality this observation is very important if fractions are collected and used for further analyses, e.g., for the determination of infrared (IR) spectra. One can presume that similar effects are present with other organic materials too. [Pg.435]

In order to summarize this section it must be noted that the possibility to evaporate conjugated oligomers in such a way that their chain axes point predominantly in one direction allows us to determine the anisotropic electronic properties of conjugated molecules. From these studies it becomes evident that in order to obtain polarized absorption or emission of light as required in polarization Filters or LCD-backlights, the application of conjugated molecules is one of the most attractive areas of application for these materials. [Pg.147]
