Offshore islands

American banks do a land-office business in the offshore centers, precisely because no reserves are needed, and every dollar of deposits can be lent out for interest. Currently American banks have over 35 billion in loans booked through Caribbean offshore islands, more than through their offices in London. [Pg.70]

Around 340 million years ago, an offshore island arc, called the Antler Arc, struck the shores about where Nevada and Idaho now are (then the westernmost part of the continent), extending the shoreline of North America a hundred miles westward. [Pg.577]

The gulls are equally at home on land, at sea, and in the air. They are adept at walking on land but are talented fliers and good swimmers. Gulls build their nests near the sea but have been found living inland, on offshore islands, in busy cities, and at garbage dumps. [Pg.108]

Before hitting a lonely beach or one of the offshore island wildernesses, stock up on groceries at Jerusalem Cafe (5773 Airport Blvd., Regency Shopping Center, a 334-304-1155). The cafe serves Middle Eastern cuisine but also stocks a good supply of vegetarian foods. [Pg.104]

Offshore islands offer an interesting option as sites for the fusion reactors. Where available, natural islands are potential sites. Where natural islands are not available, artificial islands could be constructed. These islands can be built with dirt and rocks dredged from the ocean bottom or built from steel, in the same manner as offshore oilrigs. Islands offer the advantage of minimizing the use of valuable seashore property and in some cases allow the use of relatively short pipelines to bring... [Pg.104]

The second chemical squabble is in the far North, and concerns the location of the offshore Northern Island of hydrogen. To those who do not like offshore islands, there is the problem of where to put it on the mainland. This is the war of the Big-endians versus the Little-endians. Big-endians fight to tow the island ashore to form a new Northwestern Cape, immediately north of lithium and beryllium and across from the Northeastern Cape of helium. There are good chemical reasons for doing this, and good reasons (as we shall see) based on the internal structures of these atoms, which are all closely related structurally. But it is also a little awkward, because hydro-... [Pg.90]

Nixon s efforts on this front were strongest in 1953 and 1954, during the period following his extensive tour of Asia and before the onset of the first offshore islands crisis. During his 1953 trip, Nixon made many public statements of U.S. support for the GRC, which truly represents the... [Pg.102]

The Sr/ Sr ratios of the beachrock cements of the southern Caribbean offshore islands of Venezuela (Los Roques Island) are above that of modem seawater. By contrast the Sr/ Sr ratios of Puerto Rico samples overlap those of modem seawater, and the Red Sea values are below that of modem seawater. The increase in the Sr/ Sr ratios of the beachrock cement with decreasing age suggests that weathering ratios were high or that the weathered rocks were exceptionally radiogenetic, or reflect changes in the global isotope mass balance. [Pg.125]

When it became apparent that several European nations were actively exploring Antarctica, a French medical doctor by the name of Jean-Baptiste Etiene Auguste Charcot (1867-1936) decided that France should not be excluded from this enterprise. Therefore, he raised funds for the construction of a ship he named Le Francais. In August 1903 he set sail for the Antarctic Peninsula and proceeded to map its west coast and offshore islands. Contrary to most of his predecessors, Charcot decided to winter over in a sheltered bay on Booth Island (65°05 S, 064°00 W), where he and his... [Pg.10]
