Offset press

Web Heat-Set Publication and Commercial Inks. Almost all heat-set inks are now printed on web offset presses, and are based on vehicles containing synthetic resins and/or some natural resins. These are dissolved in hydrocarbon solvent fractions which are specially fractionated for use in the ink industry. They vary in boiling range between 180 and 300 °C. Small percentages of alkyd resins (qv) may be contained in these inks. They dry in less than one second by means of solvent evaporation in a heatset oven. These ovens utilize high velocity hot air to raise the web temperature to 120-150 °C.

You can get a second hand by 14 offset press for about 300. You can get a simple book on running the press and describing the offset process from any printing supply company. 

Elasticity at high shear rates is also bound to influence tack force in the nip of an offset press. Besides shear rate the elasticity is Influenced by the molecular weight and molecular structure of the dissolved polymers, and interactions between the pigment particles, the vehicle, and the dissolved polymer molecules. Of particular interest is the effect of the molecular mobility of stiff-chain polymers such as polyindene on elasticity and tack force at the shear rates encountered in an offset printing nip.

The main components of a lithographic offset press include the paper feeding system, the damping system, the inking system, and the drying system. 

The charge household is balanced and strategic additives are optimised. Deposits in offset press roll are avoided. 

These are lithographic plates and find application on offset presses. The photosensitive materials used include diazo monomers, diazo polymers, and diazo compounds, in conjunction with additive film formers such as epoxy resins, phenoKcs, poly(vinyl acetals), polyamides, azide compounds, unsaturated chalcone, cinnamate, stilbene, and vinyl polymers and dichromated colloids. Three kinds of metallic photolithographic plates are used. These are surface plates, deep-etch plates, and bimetahic or trimetallic plates.

Toluene is used to clean the rotogravure presses. High exposure levels, up to 700 ppm, may occur during this task. Offset presses are usually cleaned with chlorinated solvents. 1,1,1-Trichloroethane and Freons were earlier commonly used as cleaning solvents. The mean concentration of 1,1,1-trichloroethane has been 23 ppm. The highest concentration observed in Finland has been 117 ppm. Solvent cleaning is a task where exposure is difficult to control with ventilation arrangements but the use of a respirator is needed. Because it usually lasts only for a short time (typically about 1 hour/week) its use is neither too heavy physically.
