It was found empirically that well-pronounced catalytic effects can be observed in the presence of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds (e.g. pyridine or quinoline derivatives, a number of alkaloids, cobalamin etc.). However, aliphatic nitrogen compounds (e.g. aminoacids), carbonyl compounds, oxygen-containing heterocyclic substances, unsaturated molecules or even hydrocarbons, e.g. azulenes also give catalytic waves. 

The special type of carbonyl-group derivatization is aimed for gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) determination of double-bond C = C positions in the unsaturated long-chain acids. The analytical derivatives for the solution of this problem are nitrogen-containing heterocycles. These compounds can be synthesized by condensation of carboxylic acids with 2-amino-2-methyl-l-propanol (2-substituted 4,4-dimethyloxazolines), 2-aminophenol (2-substituted benzoxazoles), and so forth. 

Several nitrogen-containing heterocycles can be obtained by carbonylation, at high temperature and pressure, of organic nitro compounds with, in the ortho position, an unsaturated group able to interact with the presumed intermediate nitrene species.t When Ru3(CO)i2 is used as a catalyst, an intermediate imido complex similar to 4 can be suggested on the basis of what has been discussed. However, repeated attempts to synthesize such a complex by reaction of Ru3(CO)i2 with P-substituted o-nitrostyrenes (the precursors of indoles 6-Eq. 16) have so far been unsuccessful.
