Octane reaction with oxygen

Saturated hydrocarbons have little affinity for most chemical reactants. They are nonpolar substances that are insoluble in water and unreactive toward acids, bases, or oxidizing agents. The most commonly encountered reaction of alkanes is with oxygen. Alkanes burn the oxidation of hydrocarbons underlies their important use as fuels. For example, octane reacts with oxygen as follows ... [Pg.1308]

A combustion reaction involves the reaction of a substance with oxygen gas. The complete combustion of any hydrocarbon (binary compound of carbon and hydrogen) produces carbon dioxide and water as the only products. Octane is a hydrocarbon found in gasoline. Complete combustion of octane produces 8 L of carbon dioxide for every 9 L of water vapor (both measured at the same temperature and pressure). What is the ratio of carbon atoms to hydrogen atoms in a molecule of octane ... [Pg.49]

The most striking effect of lead tetraethyl in the reaction with n-octane is on the reaction producing carbon monoxide, reaction 2. Although oxidation starts at about the same temperature as without the antiknock, the consumption of oxygen rises with increases of temperature more slowly than can be accounted for by the suppression of carbon monoxide formation particularly at low and intermediate temperatures. This indicates that the primary oxidation of the hydrocarbon (reaction 1) to aldehyde is retarded and that complete oxidation requires a higher temperature than when lead tetraethyl is absent. The disturbance which normally occurred in the reaction zone at a low temperature, takes place at a more elevated temperature when lead tetraethyl is present. [Pg.354]

Problem Within the cylinders of a car s engine, the hydrocarbon octane (CgHig), one of many components of gasoline, mixes with oxygen from the air and burns to form carbon dioxide and water vapor. Write a balanced equation for this reaction. [Pg.85]

A FIGURE 7.1 A combustion reaction In an automobile engine, hydrocarbons such as octane (CsHig) from gasoline combine with oxygen from the air and react to form carbon dioxide and water. [Pg.206]

As mentioned in the opening section of this chapter, combustion reactions power automobiles. For example, octane, a component of gasoline, reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water. [Pg.227]

In Nature (on membranes of chloroplasts) water is oxidized by the four-electron mechanism and the life-time of chlorophyll can be as long as one day. In a model octane/water system, oxygen evolution occurs also during several hours. This is indirect evidence in favor of a many-electron reaction. Therefore we shall consider a four-electron mechanism of water oxidation sensitized by chlorophyll adsorbed at the oil/water interface proposed by Volkov [81]. It was shown above that the interface is the most likely site for the water photooxidation reaction. Thus it is assumed that water can be oxidized by a reaction complex adsorbed at the interface that consists of a hydrated oligometer of chlorophyll, a hydrophilic electron acceptor and hydrophobic proton acceptor [81,82,86]. The water in the reaction complex is linked coordinatively with the magnesium of one of the chlorophyll molecules, by hydrogen bonds with the carbonyl group of another chlorophyll molecule, and with the phenol anion also... [Pg.171]

Copper (i or ii)-catalysed addition of PhSeCN to an alkene, followed by reaction with an alcohol, gives /rans-yff-alkoxyalkyl phenyl selenides. An extension of this reaction has been used to convert cyclo-octa-1,5-diene into a mixture of the isomeric oxygen-bridged 1,4- and l,5-bis(phenylseleno)cyclo-octanes. The first... [Pg.21]

Sasol Fischer-Tropsch Process. 1-Propanol is one of the products from Sasol s Fischer-Tropsch process (7). Coal (qv) is gasified ia Lurgi reactors to produce synthesis gas (H2/CO). After separation from gas Hquids and purification, the synthesis gas is fed iato the Sasol Synthol plant where it is entrained with a powdered iron-based catalyst within the fluid-bed reactors. The exothermic Fischer-Tropsch reaction produces a mixture of hydrocarbons (qv) and oxygenates. The condensation products from the process consist of hydrocarbon Hquids and an aqueous stream that contains a mixture of ketones (qv) and alcohols. The ketones and alcohols are recovered and most of the alcohols are used for the blending of high octane gasoline. Some of the alcohol streams are further purified by distillation to yield pure 1-propanol and ethanol ia a multiunit plant, which has a total capacity of 25,000-30,000 t/yr (see Coal conversion processes, gasification). [Pg.119]

Together with a shift of the proton from the a-carbon to the alkoxide oxygen, the tertiary amine is eliminated from the addition product to yield the unsaturated product 3. Early examples of the Baylis-Hillman reaction posed the problem of low conversions and slow reaction kinetics, which could not be improved with the use of simple tertiary amines. The search for catalytically active substances led to more properly adjusted, often highly specific compounds, with shorter reaction times." Suitable catalysts are, for example, the nucleophilic, sterically less hindered bases diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) 6, quinuclidin-3-one 7 and quinuclidin-3-ol (3-QDL) 8. The latter compound can stabilize the zwitterionic intermediate through hydrogen bonding. ... [Pg.29]
