Numerical visibility

Numerous visible atomic spectral lines were observed during the afterglow. The decay of the intensities of these lines followed approximately the n7 dependence that is expected for lines produced by recombination. However, the absolute intensities of the lines were not measured and no partial recombination coefficients were obtained. In contrast to the low-pressure lamps (1—130 Pa) which primarily emit at the resonance line at A = 254nm, high-pressure lamps (lO —10 Pa) also produce numerous bands in the UV and VIS regions (Fig. 16). Table 3 lists the emission lines and the relative spectral energies of the most important mercury lamps (see also [44]). Nitrilases catalyze the synthetically important hydrolysis of nitriles with formation of the corresponding carboxylic acids [4]. Scientists at Diversa expanded the collection of nitrilases by metagenome panning [56]. Nevertheless, in numerous cases the usual limitations of enzyme catalysis become visible, including poor or only moderate enantioselectivity, limited activity (substrate acceptance), and/or product inhibition. Diversa also reported the first example of the directed evolution of an enantioselective nitrilase [20]. An additional limitation had to be overcome, which is sometimes ignored, when enzymes are used as catalysts in synthetic organic chemistry product inhibition and/or decreased enantioselectivity at high substrate concentrations [20]. [Pg.39]

Ionic polysulfides dissolve in DMF, DMSO, and HMPA to give air-sensitive colored solutions. Chivers and Drummond [88] were the first to identify the blue 83 radical anion as the species responsible for the characteristic absorption at 620 nm of solutions of alkali polysulfides in HMPA and similar systems while numerous previous authors had proposed other anions or even neutral sulfur molecules (for a survey of these publications, see [88]). The blue radical anion is evidently formed by reactions according to Eqs. (5)-(8) since the composition of the dissolved sodium polysulfide could be varied between Na2S3 and NaaS with little impact on the visible absorption spectrum. On cooling the color of these solutions changes via green to yellow due to dimerization of the radicals which have been detected by magnetic measurements, ESR, UV-Vis, infrared and resonance Raman spectra [84, 86, 88, 89] see later. [Pg.141]

Because a chlorophyll molecule contains a closed circuit of ten conjugated double bounds to absorb light, spectrophotometric (UV-Vis) and fluorometric measurements are satisfactory to identify and estimate amounts of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b, usually the only ones present in fresh plant extracts. The basis of numerous spectrophotometric determinations reported in literature is that chlorophylls strongly absorb at 500 to 700 nm in the visible region and show a large typical band around 400 nm. [Pg.434]

The term numerical diffusion describes the effect of artificial diffusive fluxes which are induced by discretization errors. This effect becomes visible when the transport of quantities with small diffusivities [with the exact meaning of small yet to be specified in Eq. (42)] is considered. In macroscopic systems such small diffusivities are rarely found, at least when being looked at from a phenomenological point of view. The reason for the reduced importance of numerical diffusion in many macroscopic systems lies in the turbulent nature of most macro flows. The turbulent velocity fluctuations induce an effective diffusivity of comparatively large magnitude which includes transport effects due to turbulent eddies [1]. The effective diffusivity often dominates the numerical diffusivity. In contrast, micro flows are often laminar, and especially for liquid flows numerical diffusion can become the major effect limiting the accuracy of the model predictions. [Pg.153]
