Experimental data for the mechanical and physical properties of the selected graphite candidates (IG-110, IG-430, NBG-18, and NBG-25) were produced. In addition, the fracture and oxidation behaviors were estimated. To understand the radiation effects in nuclear-grade graphite, an atomistic stmctural change in IG-110 irradiated with 3 MeV H" " and gamma—irradiation effects were characterized (Kim et al., 2009b Hong et al., 2012 Corwin et al., 2008).

The second special task for the factory personnel was the machining of graphite. Graphite suitable for use as a moderator in nuclear reactors was a synthetic product which had been made by processing high purity petroleum coke. This material differed appreciably from natural graphite in physical properties, notably in its hardness and abrasive action. 

Aerospace and nuclear reactor appHcations of graphite demand high reHabiHty and reproducibiHty of properties, physical integrity of product, and product uniformity. The manufacturing processes require significant additional quaHty assurance steps that result in high cost.
