Nose filters

If you make use of nose filters, you should breathe through your nose as much as possible and keep your mouth closed, because chemical gases can also come in through your mouth. Zuppa et al.60 have used SOMs in the assessment of data from an electronic nose. Six chemicals—water, propanol, acetone, acetonitrile, butanol, and methanol—were presented at varying concentrations to a 32-element conducting polymer gas sensor array. The output was used to train a group of SOMs, rather than a single SOM, to avoid the problems of parameter drift. Dust masks, or particulate filter respirators, protect the respiratory system against any kind of inhaled particles. The simplest type, in the form of a cone-shaped fibrous filter that fits over the nose and mouth, is held in place by an elastic band around the back of the head. It is disposable, relatively comfortable to wear, and is useful when the dust is neither excessive nor toxic. More sophisticated versions are cartridge masks that have rubber or synthetic facepieces that cover the mouth and nose and are attached to the head by straps. Flat cylindrical cartridges containing dust filters are attached to each side of the facepieces. The cartridges come apart for easy removal and replacement of the filters. The devices are useful in heavy, continued dust conditions. The cartridge filters should be replaced whenever they become clogged. [Pg.142]

Furthermore, the olfactometer should be able to deliver the above mentioned ranges of stimuli over a wide range of dilution ratios (from 1 to 10 6) in order to cover the variability of human sensitivity to different substances. Such a range may still be too small in some cases. If so, provisions for predilution may be required. Finally, it will be clear that both the dilution air and the ambient air in which the measurement takes place should be odour free. Although this may seem quite obvious, in many cases this requirement is not fulfilled. Either the dilution air has an intrinsic smell which is insufficiently filtered out or parts of the olfactometer give off an odour.
