Norwich Pharmaceuticals

In the 1950s Morton began to move beyond salt into related chemical niche lines, including bromides, adhesives, and dye stuffs. In 1965 it advanced further afield by acquiring Simonize, a maker of auto wax and cleaners. Then, in 1969, it progressed into pharmaceuticals by merging with Norwich Pharmaceuticals. The venture did not prosper, however, and Morton sold it off to Procter Gamble in 1982. 

A solution of l-amino-3-[4-(4-methyl-l-piperazinyl)butyl]-2,4-imidazolidinedione hydrochloride (0.0094 mole), dimethylformamide (75 ml) and 5-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-furancarboxaldehyde [prepared as described in U.S. Patent No. 20 4,882,354, to Huang et al., assigned to Norwich Eaton Pharmaceuticals, Inc., issued November 21, 1984 see Cols. 7 and 8] (1.94 g, 0.0094 mole) is stirred at room temperature for 72 h. The mixture is filtered, collecting the solid. Recrystallization from absolute ethanol/H20 and air-drying gives 2.63 g (0.0050 mole) of l-[[[5-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-furanyl]methylene]amino]3-[4-(4-methyl-l-piperazinyl)butyl]-2,4-imidazolidinedion hydrochloride.

Duncan Q.M. Craig, Ph.D., is head of pharmacy at the School of Chemical Sciences and Pharmacy at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, U.K. Previously, he worked at the School of Pharmacy, The Queen s University of Belfast, joining in 1999. There he set up the Pharmaceutical Materials Science Programme within the Drug Delivery and Biomaterials Group. He was previously a reader in pharmaceutical materials science at the School of Pharmacy, University of London.

In this program 20 students from predominantly undergraduate institutions were selected to receive 2500 fellowships to conduct research full time, normally during the summer months, with their faculty mentor. For the summer preceding their entrance into graduate school, industrial sponsors offer their awardees the opportunity to work in their corporate research laboratories. These Research Partnerships link student and faculty member with the fellowship sponsor to provide them with an association for mutual identification not otherwise possible.
