Normalized oxygen concentration

Oxic An environment having normal oxygen concentrations. In lakes this commonly implies dissolved O2 concentrations in the range of 2.0-7.0 ml 1 (cf. anoxic, dysoxic). [Pg.477]

Trips should normally be designed so that they operate if the power supply is lost. If this will cause a dangerous upset in plant operation, then an alarm should sound when power is lost. Trips should be tested at startup if they have been worked on during a shutdown. Particularly important trips, such as those on furnaces and compressors and high-oxygen concentration trips, should always be tested after a major shutdown. [Pg.282]

Bateman, Gee, Barnard, and others at the British Rubber Producers Research Association [6,7] developed a free radical chain reaction mechanism to explain the autoxidation of rubber which was later extended to other polymers and hydrocarbon compounds of technological importance [8,9]. Scheme 1 gives the main steps of the free radical chain reaction process involved in polymer oxidation and highlights the important role of hydroperoxides in the autoinitiation reaction, reaction lb and Ic. For most polymers, reaction le is rate determining and hence at normal oxygen pressures, the concentration of peroxyl radical (ROO ) is maximum and termination is favoured by reactions of ROO reactions If and Ig. [Pg.105]

The control of glucose oxidase production is still not fully eluddated, nor is the role of gluconic add in cells. However, elevated levels of glucose oxidase are found in conditions of high glucose concentrations and above normal oxygen tension. [Pg.143]

As discussed in Chapter 4, chemicals can be a nuisance or pose health risks if they become airborne as a result of inadequate process control, operation and maintenance malpractice, inadequate maintenance, incomplete understanding of the process etc. Hazards may arise if the oxygen concentration in the air fluctuates beyond its normal level of 21% by volume, and fire/explosion dangers may arise from the presence of flammable gases, vapours or dusts in the atmosphere. Thus air quality tests may be required for a variety of purposes such as ... [Pg.208]

Bilirubin (normal plasma concentration < 20 iM) is able to scavenge singlet oxygen and peroxyl radicals. It has been proposed that bilirubin bound to human albumin contributes significantly to the non-enzymic antioxidant defences in human plasma (Stocker and Ames, 1987). [Pg.42]

During regeneration of an adsorber in the cold box of an air separation plant, regeneration gas exited via the adsorber drain pipe. This still contained some liquid oxygen. Very low regeneration-gas flows permitted desorption of acetylene and other hydrocarbons at above normal (ppm) concentrations, these condensed or crystallised into the liquid oxygen and the mixture finally detonated, causing... [Pg.1853]

The partial oxygen pressure, p02, is particularly significant in metabolic processes of cells, and its variation from normal values often indicates pathologies (ischemic diseases, strokes, tumors). Accurate and localized measurements of the oxygen concentration are also desirable for differentiation between venous and arterial blood, or for cerebral mapping of task activation. In the past, invasive methods were used involving oxygen-sensitive electrodes which had to be placed directly in the blood or tissue and could only offer p02 from a few body points. [Pg.871]

The low value of 1.0 in Table VII for the rigid Polyurethane foam in the box-methods may be explained by low ventilation rate. The experiment is over in less than 1 minute and most of the material is combusted during that period. The ventilation rate becomes to low to generate a "normal" ratio of C02/C0 for fast burning materials. In this particular case the oxygen concentration become very close to 0 oxygen. [Pg.45]

Normal air contains about 21% oxygen by volume. The human body is sensitive to reductions in oxygen concentration concentrations below 19.5% are dangerous, and concentrations below 16% can cause distress. Respiratory equipment without self-contained air supplies must never be used in atmospheres below 19.5% oxygen. [Pg.107]

A material burning in an enclosure will depart from its burning rate in normal air due to thermal effects of the enclosure and the oxygen concentration that controls flame heating. Chapter 9 illustrated these effects in which Equation (9.73) describes steady burning in the form ... [Pg.352]
