In the general case, where the decay of both levels is caused not only by spontaneous emission but also by nonradiative relaxation, the line profile is determined by the total decay constants and and the normalized line profile becomes... [Pg.83]

Solution of the flow equations has been based on the application of the implicit 0 time-stepping/continuous penalty scheme (Chapter 4, Section 5) at a separate step from the constitutive equation. The constitutive model used in this example has been the Phan-Thien/Tanner equation for viscoelastic fluids given as Equation (1.27) in Chapter 1. Details of the finite element solution of this equation are published elsewhere and not repeated here (Hou and Nassehi, 2001). The predicted normal stress profiles along the line AB (see Figure 5.12) at five successive time steps are. shown in Figure 5.13. The predicted pattern is expected to be repeated throughout the entire domain. [Pg.157]

FiG. 10 Normalized density profiles p z)/for the associating fluid at a hard wall. The association energy is jk T — 7 and the bulk density is p = 0.2098 (a), e ykgT = 5 and the bulk density equals 0.9038 (b). The solid and dashed lines denote the results of the modified Meister-Kroll theory and the theory of Segura et al., respectively. The Monte Carlo data in (a) are marked as points. FIG. 19 Normalized concentration profiles (solid lines) of the reactants and products in the DCE (a) or aqueous (b) receptor phase for the reaction between Fc (DCE) and IrClg (aqueous) with 0.1 M CIO4 in both DCE and the aqueous phase. In each case, the reactant concentration in the receptor phase was 1 mM, with 10 mM reactant inside the droplet. Drop times and final sizes were (a) 5.54 s and 0.96 mm, and (b) 6.32 s and 1.00 mm. The theoretical profiles (dashed lines) are for a transport-controlled reaction, with no transfer of the product ions. (Reprinted from Ref. 80. The wavelength of a laser line, however, is determined by two factors the fluorescence profile of the corresponding transition in the laser medium and the eigenfrequencies of the laser resonator modes. At normal multimode operation of a laser, where many axial and transverse modes participate in laser oscillation, these eigenfrequencies cover the whole spontaneous line profile nearly uniformly. [Pg.7]

HEK-293 cells, derived from human embryo kidney, were transformed with human type 5 adenovirus (Graham et al., 1977). These cells exhibit epithelial morphology and can be adapted to suspension growth in serum-free media. In addition, this cell line is easily transfected and has been explored for viral vector production for gene therapy and for obtaining human recombinant proteins with normal glycosylation profiles. [Pg.31]

In the Smith-Hieftje system, the lamp power is subjected to short pulses of high current.17 This causes momentary bursts of high atom concentration in the hollow cathode. The emission line profile is broadened as an atom cloud forms just outside the cathode, which causes absorption at the centre of the emitted line profile, as shown in Figure 7. Effectively the single narrow emission line is split into a pair of lines immediately adjacent to the original line centre. Thus, in the normal mode, atomic and molecular absorption are measured, but in the pulsed mode, only molecular absorbance is monitored. The difference between the two signals provides a corrected atomic absorbance signal. [Pg.39]

In the lower sketch, with the field on, the absorption spectrum changes, and the Figure 8 Schematic representation of how the Zeeman effect works. In the top sketch, no field is applied (normal A AS) and the absorption profile (—) overlaps the emission profile (—). In the lower sketch, with the field on, the absorption spectrum changes, and the <r components of the absorption profile no longer significantly overlap the source emission line profile. Broad band molecular absorption would still be detected, however...
The second approach to studying metabolic disease is the establishment of normal base-line profiles of the volatilisable metabolites (either free or as derivatives) in the human physiological fluids. In this, the GC... [Pg.64]

Semen Analysis. The semen analysis measures ejaculate volume, pH, sperm count, motility, and forward progression. Semen should be analyzed within 1 hour after collection. Although the semen analysis is not a test for infertility, it is considered the most important laboratory test in the evaluation of male fertility. Controversy exists as to what constitutes a normal semen profile. With the exception of the azoospermic male (defined as no sperm in the ejaculate), the lines between fertility and infertility are blurred, and are intimately associated with the status of the female partner s reproductive function. However, clinical studies of infertile men and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines have helped establish hmits of adequacy (Table 53-4). "... [Pg.2121]

In 1949, however, Warren pointed out that there was important information about the state of a cold-worked metal in the shape of its diffraction lines, and that to base conclusions only on line width was to use only part of the experimental evidence. If the observed line profiles, corrected for instrumental broadening, are expressed as Fourier series, then an analysis of the Fourier coefficients discloses both particle size and strain, without the necessity for any prior assumption as to the existence of either [9,3, G.30, G.39]. Warren and Averbach [9.4] made the first measurements of this kind, on brass filings, and many similar studies followed [9.5]. Somewhat later, Paterson [9.6] showed that the Fourier coefficients of the line profile could also disclose the presence of stacking faults caused by cold work. (In FCC metals and alloys, for example, slip on 111 planes can here and there alter the normal stacking sequence ABCABC... of these planes to the faulted... [Pg.287]

Collisions between molecules are the greatest cause of line broadening at the pressures normally employed for MMW spectrometry. In the Lorentz theory (ref 2, p. 338) the lifetime of the rotational state involved in the transition is ended abruptly by collision with another molecule which stops the rotation. When the molecule starts to rotate again, its phase with respect to the other molecules is random. For an assembly of molecules this will give rise to an absorption line profile with a FWHM of Xjlm, where r is the mean time between collisions. This is the linear sum of two terms, one for the upper and one for the lower state, having the shape of the Lorentz function (Figure 1.4) when Av [Pg.12]
