Nonlinear optical organic polymers

Nonlinear optical organic materials such as porphyrins, dyes, and phthalocyanines provide optical limiting properties for photonic devices to control light frequency and intensity in a predictable manner. The optical limit of CNTs composites is saturated at CNTs exceeding 3.8wt% relative to the polymer mass (Chen et al., 2002). Polymer/ CNT composites could also be used to protect human eyes, for example, optical elements, optical sensors, and optical switching (Cao et al., 2002). [Pg.200]

The potential application of organic and polymeric materials, especially glassy polymers, is promising as evidenced by the pertinent material properties. A model nonlinear optical glassy polymer system, combining the large nonlinear susceptibilities of the dopant and favorable optical properties of the host polymer glass, was fabricated and evaluated. The nonlinear optical... [Pg.407]

Aromatic poly(benzothiazole)s are thermally and thermooxidatively stable and have outstanding chemical resistance and third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. Aromatic poly(benzothiazole)s can be spun into highly-oriented ultrahigh strength and ultrahigh modulus fibers. However, this type of polymer is insoluble in most organic solvents. Therefore, hexafluoroisopropylidene units are introduced in the polymer backbone to obtain soluble or processable aromatic poly(benzothiazole)s. [Pg.147]

Polysilanes are cr-conjugated polymers composed of Si-Si skeletons and organic pendant groups. They are insulators with filled intramolecular valence bands and empty intramolecular conduction bands. However, because of strong cr conjugation, they have rather narrow band gaps of less than 4 eV [24,25] and are converted to conductors by photoexcitation or by doping electron donors or acceptors. Recently they have attracted much attention because of their potential utility as one-dimensional conductors, nonlinear optical materials, and electroluminescent materials [26-28]. [Pg.627]
