Titanium dioxide is widely used to color durable and nondurable goods such as toys, appUances, automobiles, furniture, and plastic packaging films. Furthermore, Ti02 pigments absorb UV radiation with a wavelength <415 nm and thus protect the pigmented goods from these harmful rays. 

After providing for savings, consumers use disposable income to buy services and goods (collectively termed final products). Personal consumption expenditures per person for durable goods, nondurable goods, and services are shown in Table 2.8. 

It would be instructive to look at an assortment of growth figures for the United States in terms of personal consumption during selected years. Table 10.7 reflects the growth in durable goods, nondurable goods, and services. 

Nondurable goods represent by far the largest category of PS in U.S. MSW, 56 percent, with plastic plates and cups alone representing 31 percent (Fig. 8.29). Durable goods account for about 32 percent, with packaging amounting to about 10 percent. A substantial... 

Polyvinyl chloride in U.S. MSW comes mostly from nondurable goods, followed closely by packaging and durable goods (Fig. 8.33). In western Europe, about 26 percent of PVC is used in pipes and fittings, 17 percent in film and sheet, 11 percent in window profiles, 9 percent in cables and wires, 5 percent in bottles, and 18 percent in floorings and coatings. ... 

It has been estimated by the U.S. EPA (1990b] that 29 billion pounds of plasdc are disposed in the MSW stream each year and that only 1.1% of the waste plastic stream, or 400 million pounds annually, ate recovered (Table 1.4). Municipal solid wastes come from residential, commercial, institutional and industrial sources, but do not include wastes such as construction debris, household hazardous waste, or other wastes regulated by Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Subtitle D. Seventy percent of discarded plastic is composed of nondurable goods and packaging materials. 

PET beverage bottles are the largest single source of PET in municipal solid waste, and packaging accounts for more PET in MSW than either durable or nondurable goods, as shown in Fig. 12.9. 

In Europe, recycling is beginning to change the way plastic suppliers think. Industry is looking beyond its normal supply chain and taking into consideration the material after its normal use (lifetime) in both durable and nondurable goods... 

For example, if the material is a nondurable good, such as bags and food wrap, the type and concentration of antioxidant is chosen to minimize lumecessary costs associated with stabilizing the polymer. The antioxidant should be able to provide stabilization for the initial melt compoimding and processing into the finished article. It is important to consider that scrap from the melt compounding needs to be recycled, and imexpected shutdowns and start-ups may occm. 

Nondurable goods are usable only for a short period of time, a lifetime generally less than three years. Durable goods remain usable for a long period of lime, generally products having a lifetime of more than ihrcc y srs.
