Chemistry can be divided (somewhat arbitrarily) into the study of structures, equilibria, and rates. Chemical structure is ultimately described by the methods of quantum mechanics equilibrium phenomena are studied by statistical mechanics and thermodynamics and the study of rates constitutes the subject of kinetics. Kinetics can be subdivided into physical kinetics, dealing with physical phenomena such as diffusion and viscosity, and chemical kinetics, which deals with the rates of chemical reactions (including both covalent and noncovalent bond changes). Students of thermodynamics learn that quantities such as changes in enthalpy and entropy depend only upon the initial and hnal states of a system consequently thermodynamics cannot yield any information about intervening states of the system. It is precisely these intermediate states that constitute the subject matter of chemical kinetics. A thorough study of any chemical reaction must therefore include structural, equilibrium, and kinetic investigations. 

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) can be prepared according to a number of approaches that are different in the way the template is linked to the functional monomer and subsequently to the polymeric binding sites (Fig. 6-1). Thus, the template can be linked and subsequently recognized by virtually any combination of cleavable covalent bonds, metal ion co-ordination or noncovalent bonds. The first example of molecular imprinting of organic network polymers introduced by Wulff was based on a covalent attachment strategy i.e. covalent monomer-template, covalent polymer-template [12]. 

The correct pairing of half-cystine residues is shown to be dependent upon specific noncovalent bonds 17). With this finding in mind, oxidation of a pair of associating thiols (7 and 2) was chosen as a model reaction. The latter method, the template method, involves a reaction to produce a transition state similar to the desired product using a template. The template should have a shape similar to the space of the product. The template interacts with the substrate by forming noncovalent bonds such as coordination bonds (Fig. 3). The representative and most successful examples are found in crown ether chemistry. In the chemistry, alkali metals act as templates to create a crown-ether-like transition state with an ethylene glycol substrate by using metal-oxygen coordination bonds.

Typically several different carotenoids occur in plant tissues containing this class of pigments. Here, the concept of linkage implies only that each intermolecular noncovalent bond is sufficiently large compared with kTto withstand ambient thermal collisions. Thus, for near-standard-state conditions (where kT 0.6kcal mol-1), even weak noncovalent interactions of 1-2 kcal mol-1 may be adequate to yield supramolecular complexes with stable equilibrium populations, thereby becoming true constituent units of the phase of lowest free energy.

Kinetically stable rotaxane-like species have been synthesized without the aid of strong noncovalent bonds previously (I. T. Harrison, Preparation of Rotaxanes by the Statistical Method , J. Chem. Soc Perkin Trans. 11974, 301-304). However, the yields reported were veiy low.
