Surface coating with a non-metallic inorganic material like enamel. This coating is very effective as the parts can be used at higher temperatures but an isolating material covers the surfaces. 

A non-metallic inorganic material can be a bulk material (e. g., a glass chip, a quartz chip or a silicon chip which possesses a natural silicon oxide layer similar to glass) or a coating (e. g., a dielectric transition metal oxide coating on a chip). 

Chemically, a glass surface, a quartz surface, a silicon surface with a natural silicon oxide layer and an oxide ceramic coating surface are similar. Hence the methods for bonding polymer microfluidic scaffolds to them are similar. For simplicity, in the following subchapters the term glass stands for all these non-metallic inorganic materials. 

In Chapter 1, we recalled the abundance of silicates on the Earth s crust and indicated that they were the basic components of non-metallic inorganic materials glasses, cements and ceramics. We restricted ourselves to ceramics and said that almost all traditional ceramics are sihcate materials. This is not necessarily the case with technical ceramics. For which it is alumina that constitutes the most useful compound and the most widespread. We can say that alumina is for a ceramist what iron is for a metallurgist and, to pursue the analogy further, that the alumina-silica diagram is as important for ceramics as the iron-carbon diagram is for metals.

Ceramics and Ceramic Materials. Non-metallic inorganic or carbon solids, artificially produced or shaped by a high-temperature process, and inorganic composites wholly or essentially comprising such materials. Ceramics are usually taken to be shaped articles. (For a discussion of the problems in defining ceramics, and for official and quasiofficial definitions in various contexts, see appendix a). 

As shown above, there are many choices for the catalyst materials which are non-Pt families, such as metal, inorganic materials, and organic materials, for oxide electrode anion-exchange membrane fuel cells. This is a large advantage for the reduction of the cost of the batteries [3]. 

The discovery in 1973 that polysulfur nitride (SN)X, a polymer comprised only of non-metallic elements, behaves as a superconductor at 0.26 K sparked widespread interest in sulfur-nitrogen (S-N) chemistry. In the past 30 years, the field of inorganic S-N chemistry has reached maturity and interfaces with other areas of chemistry, e.g., theoretical chemistry, materials chemistry, organic synthesis, polymer chemistry and biochemistry, have been established and are under active development. This interest has been extended to Se-N and, to a lesser extent, Te-N systems. 

There are many organic and inorganic materials available which exhibit significant non-linear optical properties. In the present context, however, we underline that ferrocene derivatives were the first organo-metallic materials observed possessing non-linear optical properties. In fact, in 1987 it was reported that ci s-ferrocenyl-2-(4-nitrophenyl)ethylene has a 62-fold greater efficiency than urea in generating the second harmonic, Scheme 13.71...
