Non-linear Responses

This will be a non-linear response for all non-zero values of n. (2.27) For the Maxwell Model... [Pg.452]

There are two notable features of the quantitative performance of this type of interface. It has been found that non-linear responses are often obtained at low analyte concentrations. This has been attributed to the formation of smaller particles than at higher concentrations and their more easy removal by the jet separator. Signal enhancement has been observed due to the presence of (a) coeluting compounds (including any isotopically labelled internal standard that may be used), and (b) mobile-phase additives such as ammonium acetate. It has been suggested that ion-molecule aggregates are formed and these cause larger particles to be produced in the desolvation chamber. Such particles are transferred to the mass spectrometer more efficiently. It was found, however, that the particle size distribution after addition of ammonium acetate, when enhancement was observed, was little different to that in the absence of ammonium acetate when no enhancement was observed. [Pg.150]

The concerns we have expressed are bound to get even more acute if the problem under study demands that we are able to adequately describe distortion effects induced in the electron distribution by external fields. The evaluation of linear (and, still more, non linear) response funetions [1] by perturbation theory then forces one to take care also of the nonoccupied portion of the complete orbital spectrum, which is entrusted with the role of representing the polarization caused by the external fields in the unperturbed electron distribution [4], ... [Pg.204]

Besides the elementary properties of index permutational symmetry considered in eq. (7), and intrinsic point group symmetry of a given tensor accounted for in eqs. (8)-(14), much more powerful group-theoretical tools [6] can be developed to speed up coupled Hartree-Fock (CHF) calculations [7-11] of hyperpolarizabilities, which are nowadays almost routinely periformed in a number of studies dealing with non linear response of molecular systems [12-35], in particular at the self-consistent-field (SCF) level of accuracy. [Pg.281]

The region from A to D is called the dynamic range. The regions 2 and 4 constitute the most imfwrtant difference with the hard delimiter transfer function in perceptron networks. These regions rather than the near-linear region 3 are most important since they assure the non-linear response properties of the network. It may... [Pg.667]

Other statistical parameters that can be used include examination of residuals and the output from the ANOVA table of regression statistics. This may indicate that a non-linear response function should be checked [9]. [Pg.89]

The toxic effects model uses concentration-time profiles from the respiratory and skin protection models as input to estimate casualty probabilities. Two approaches are available a simple linear dose-effect model as incorporated in RAP and a more elaborate non-linear response model, based on the Toxic Load approach. The latter provides a better description of toxic effects for agents that show significant deviations of simple Haber s law behaviour (i.e. toxic responses only depend on the concentration-time product and not on each quantity separately). [Pg.65]

The examples we have demonstrated so far are schematically shown in Figure 1. Although the photochemical events and the subsequent physical changes are different from system to system, a general trend is the there is a non-linear response to the degree of photochemical reaction, that is, the image amplification has been demonstrated. [Pg.211]

GfSOj) for Hq/Bp (50) PSF is intermediate between G(S02> for the homopolymers. Thus, there is no additional protective effect analogous to the non-linear response of G(H.) as the mole fraction of benzene in cyclohexane is increased (3.47. This indicates that the spatial range of enhanced radiation protection afforded by the biphenyl group is limited. [Pg.257]

Firstly, it helps to provide a cross-check on whether the response of the material is linear or can be treated as such. Sometimes a material is so fragile that it is not possible to apply a low enough strain or stress to obtain a linear response. However, it is also possible to find non-linear responses with a stress/strain relationship that will allow satisfactory application of some of the basic features of linear viscoelasticity. Comparison between the transformed data and the experiment will indicate the validity of the application of linear models. [Pg.132]

Most characterisation of non-linear responses of materials with De < 1 have concerned the application of a shear rate and the shear stress has been monitored. The ratio at any particular rate has defined the apparent viscosity. When these values are plotted against one another we produce flow curves. The reason for the popularity of this approach is partly historic and is related to the type of characterisation tool that was available when rheology was developing as a subject. As a consequence there are many expressions relating shear stress, viscosity and shear rate. There is also a plethora of interpretations for meaning behind the parameters in the modelling equations. There are a number that are commonly used as phenomenological descriptions of the flow behaviour. [Pg.214]

The non-linear response of plastic materials is more challenging in many respects than pseudoplastic materials. While some yield phenomena, such as that seen in clay dispersions of montmorillonite, can be catastrophic in nature and recover very rapidly, others such as polymer particle blends can yield slowly. Not all clay structures catastrophically thin. Clay platelets forming an elastic structure can be deformed by a finite strain such that they align with the deforming field. When the strain... [Pg.225]
