Trimethylolethane trinitrate (metriol trinitrate) is not satisfactory as a plasticizer for nitrocellulose, and must be used with other plasticizers such as metriol triacetate. Mixtures with nitroglycerin tend to improve the mechanical properties of double-base cast propellants at high and low temperatures. Metriol trinitrate has also been used in combination with triethylene glycol dinitrate as a plasticizer for nitrocellulose. Its physical properties are Hsted in Table 7 (118-122). [Pg.13]

This base is used to the minimum possible extent in the final explosive as the water it contains does not contribute to the power and indeed requires energy for its evaporation. All slurry explosives therefore contain further ammonium nitrate in solid form and also a fuel for combustion. The ammonium nitrate is usually in dense form similar to that used in nitroglycerine explosives as this gives the best physical properties. However, it is common practice to mix the explosive hot so that much or all of the solid ammonium nitrate results from crystallisation during cooling. [Pg.56]

Absorption or migration of nitroglycerine (NG), stabilizer and plasticizer from propellant to inhibitor should be as less as possible so that the physical properties and ballistic performance of the propellant during its storage are not adversely affected to the extent of vitiating their serviceability. [Pg.291]

The physical properties of the nitric esters resemble in a general way the physical properties of the alcohols from which they are derived. Thus, methyl and ethyl nitrate, like methyl and ethyl alcohol, are volatile liquids nitroglycerin is a viscous oil, more viscous and less volatile than glycol dinitrate as glycerin is more viscous and less volatile than glycol. The first explosives to be listed as permissible by the U. S. Bureau of Mines were certain Monobels and Carbonites, and Monobels are still among the most important of American per-missibles. Monobels contain about 10% nitroglycerin, about 10% carbonaceous material, wood pulp, flour, sawdust, etc., by the physical properties of which the characteristics of the explosive are somewhat modified, and about 80% ammonium nitrate of which, however, a portion, say 10%, may be substituted by a volatile salt such as sodium chloride. [Pg.351]

High explosives may be class d according to their physical properties as powdery, meltable, semi-meltable and plastic. Propellants may be grouped on the basis of chemical composition into gun powder and similar mixtures, nitrocellulose (single base) and nitroglycerine (double base) powders, With respect to their uses and some properties they are divided into black powder, smokeless and flashless powders, and rocket propellants. [Pg.4]
