Urbanski, Malendowicz and Dybowicz [68] examined the behaviour of nitroglycerine (and of other nitric esters) exposed to ultra-violet rays and established that nitroglycerine irradiated once for a short period with a quartz lamp started to undergo slow decomposition which stopped only after an interval of 2-3 days. A sample of 3 g nitroglycerine was irradiated for 1 hr with rays from quartz lamp passing through a filter permeable to rays of 3200-4100 A whilst maintained at a temperature of 15°C. In order to test the decomposition of the specimen, from time to time 0.25-0.5 g sample of the substance were removed, shaken with water and the pH values determined. A very dangerous fire hazard when exposed to heat, flame, or by spontaneous chemical reaction. A severe explosion hazard when shocked or exposed to O3, heat, or flame. Nitroglycerin is a powerful explosive, very sensitive to mechanical shock, heat, or UV radiation. Small quantities of it can readily be detonated by a hammer blow on a hard surface, particularly when it has been absorbed in filter paper. It explodes when heated to 215°C. Frozen nitroglycerin is somewhat less sensitive than the liquid. However, a half-thawed or partially thawed mixture is more sensitive than either one. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of NOx. [Pg.1017]

Mineral jelly or para n may be separated from nitroglycerine by boiling with So per cent, methyl alcohol. This dissolves the nitroglycerine. The solution is filtered and the insoluble potion dissolved in ether, evaporated and weighed. Alternatively the nitroglycerine may be removed by saponifleation with alcoholic potassium h rox dc, and the solution diluted with water and extracted with ether. [Pg.440]

Paraffin wax separates out from the nitroglycerine w hen the ether is evaporated off. It is pressed between filter papers and identified by its form and melting point. To determine its quantity the extract is melted and separated in a warmed separating funnel. Resin may be saponified by hot soda, reprecipitated with acid and weighed, or may be titrated with alcoholic potassium hydroxide, using phenol phthalein as indicator. [Pg.442]
