Nitric acid continued chemistry

Electrolyte chemistries continue to be discovered and need to be carefully controlled, e.g., there is a need to track nitric acid molarity as well as total acid molarity in the catholyte to avoid silver deposition, and the deposition of lead dioxide on cell electrodes and in electrode cavities, which has required the development of a formic acid wash. [Pg.90]

In later years, Gay-Lussac continued to advance science. He developed a precise method for analyzing the alcoholic content of liquors and patented a method for the manufacture of sulfuric acid. His last publication on aqua regia (a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids that dissolves gold or platinum) came out the year before his death in 1850. Gay-Lussac was a top-notch experimentalist and theoretician. More than twenty-five years after Gay-Lussac died, the prominent chemist Marcellin Bertholet (1827-1907) once said, We all teach. . . the chemistry of Lavoisier and Gay-Lussac (Crosland, p. 248), a fitting tribute to two outstanding scientists of the era. see also Acid-Base Chemistry Berthollet, Claude-Louis Charles, Jacques Dalton, John Davy, Humphry Lavoisier, Antoine. [Pg.150]

Neptunium. Np is in a class with Pa no efforts have been made to use it as a fuel solute, but consideration has been given to its formation in and removal from blanket solutions of [30a]. The chemistry of neptunium has been reviewed by Hindman et al. [30b], and the hydrolytic behavior has been reviewed by Kraus [30c]. Continuous separation of Np239 would provide a Pu product of high purity by radioactive decay, whereas plutonium recovered from long-term irradiation of usually contains appreciable amounts of Pu °. Spectrophotometric cells for use at elevated temperatures and pre.ssures in the study of the chemistry of neptunium (and other materials) have recently been developed by Wag-gener [30d] and have been used to measure the absorption spectra of dilute neptunium perchlorate in its six-, five-, four-, and three-valence states, using heavy w ater as the solvent. Dilute solutions of neptunyl nitrate in nitric acid have been so studied at temperatures up to 250°C the pentavalent state was found to be stable under the test conditions [30e]. [Pg.101]

Paul continued to make major contributions to stratospheric chemistry. For example, he explained how nitric acid clouds cause the Antarctic ozone hole. At the same time, he also turned his attention to the troposphere, which is the air layer that connects with the biosphere and where weather and climate take place. The troposphere is also prone to air pollution, while it is cleaned by oxidation reactions. The self-cleaning capacity relies on the presence of reactive hydroxyl radicals that convert pollutant gases into more soluble compounds that are removed by rain. The primary formation of hydroxyl radicals in turn is from ozone. While most ozone is located in the stratosphere, protecting life on Earth against harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun, a small amount is needed in the troposphere to support the self-cleaning capacity. While previous theories had assumed that tropospheric ozone originates in the stratosphere, Paul discovered that much of it is actually chemically formed within the troposphere. The formation mechanism is similar to the creation of ozone pollution in photochemical smog . [Pg.258]
