The table on the next page indicates the relationship between problem size and resource requirements for various theoretical methods. Problem size is measured primarily as the total number of basis functions (N) involved in a calculation, which itself depends on both the system size and the basis set chosen some items depend also on the number of occupied and virtual (unoccupied) orbitals (O and V respectively), which again depend on both the molecular system and the basis set. The table lists both the formal, algorithmic dependence and the actual dependence as implemented in Gaussian (as of this writing), which may be somewhat better due to various computational techniques... [Pg.122]

There s not just one DNA polymerase there s a whole army. DNA replication actually occurs in large complexes containing many proteins and sometimes many polymerases. In eukaryotic cells we have to replicate both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, and there are specific DNA polymerases for each. In addition to DNA replication, you have to make new DNA when you repair. Consequently, the function may be specialized for repair or replication. There can also be specialization for making the leading or lagging strand. Isorhynchophyllane, in contrast to rhynchophyllane, reacts readily with mercuric acetate to give a dilactam which, although it has not been obtained crystalline, appears to contain oxindole (IR-absorption at 1715 cm-1) and six-membered lactam (IR-absorption at 1625 cm-1) groupings. The formation of a second lactam function instead of an immonium salt in this oxidation can be rationalized by the sequence of reactions shown next page, which necessarily implies attachment of the -position of the oxindole nucleus to a carbon atom adjacent to Nb. Ring C must therefore be five-membered, and the fact that the C-3 to C-7 bond is severed in this oxidation is supported by the lithium... [Pg.77]

The functionality may vary with reaction conditions. For example, in base-catalyzed copolymerization of phenol and formaldehyde, both monomers are bifunctional at ambient temperature, but phenol becomes trifunctional if the temperature is raised sufficiently. Copolymerization at ambient temperature can produce essentially linear, liquid, resole-type "prepolymers" of low molecular weight. Upon acidification and heat-curing, methylene and ether crosslinks formed by the now trifunctional phenol units transform the polymer into an insoluble resin [7] (see next page). The language of Statistical Mechanics evolved over a considerable period of time.
