New Ecological Paradigm

In this chapter, we focus on the items dealing with environmental issues, and particularly with six statements, which belong to the revised New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) (Dunlap et al. 2000). Phytosociology is based on too many deterministic asp>ects, first of all the importance given to the linear concept of ecological succession (serai step ), not compatible with the reality, being in contrast with the new scientific paradigms. 

The microbial loop concept has been the prevailing paradigm for marine microbial food webs for two decades and has stimulated work on DOM sources and composition, rates of biomass production, transfer efficiencies, and respiratory losses (Benner, 1998 del Giorgio and Cole, 2000 Ducklow, 2000 Williams, 2000). The only major modification has arisen from new information on the abundance and ecology of viruses (Wilhelm and Suttle, 1999 Fuhrman, 1999, 2000).

Now it is 2 years later, and we have made major revisions to this edition in order to keep pace with the field of environmental toxicology. Ecological risk assessment has become the operating paradigm, and endocrine disruption has taken on a new importance. The field is more sophisticated in the data analysis tools that it uses, and multivariate approaches are becoming more common in the literature. 

A short exposition of the main modern scientific paradigms (from hierarchic structure to non-equilibrium thermodynamics) and the new importance of history is necessary to better understand these characters of living systems and to upxlate ecology.
