Manus Basin is a back-arc basin located north of the New Britain island arc that consists of NE-SW trending ridge segments offset by transform faults. On the Manus Spreading Center in central Manus Basin the Vienna Woods hydrothermal field consists of a 300 m-diameter sulfide mound with an extensive foresf of active and inactive sphalerite-barite-rich, sulfide-sulfate-oxide chimneys up to 15 m-long atop it. Vent fluids from one of the active chimneys reach temperatures as high as 302°C. In the eastern Manus Basin, two important hydrothermal fields are known. The PACMANUS field includes discontinuous sulfide occurrences over a 3 by 0.8 km area and active venting of unknown nature. Volcanic rocks are andesitic to rhyodacitic. 

Multivariate diagrams are used to compare calculated and measured rock compositions. Provided the composition of a parental melt is known, the composition of derivative liquids can be calculated and compared with the composition of liquids which are thought to have been derived from the parental melt. This is the approach used by Arth (1981), who modelled the REE chemistry of andesites and dadtes in New Britain by fractional crystallization from basaltic and basaltic andesites. Arth estimated the mineralogy of the fractionating assemblage from the proportions of phenocrysts present in the lavas and calculated REE patterns which show excellent agreement with the observed REE patterns in the rodcs.

Fatty acid compositions of palm oil are shown in Table 8.2. The samples included 21 from Malaysia, with further samples from the Ivory Coast, Sumatra, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, New Britain and Nigeria. The fatty acid composition does not vary much by geographical harvest region - information that we passed onto the Codex Alimentarius Fats and Oils Committee which was able to update and revise its published fatty acid composition specifications for palm oil.
