Neutralization-ionization mass spectroscop

While the use of direct absorption methods has grown, indirect action spectroscopic methods continue to be widely and successfully used in the study of neutral molecular clusters. As mentioned earlier, there are two commonly used detection methods, mass spectrometers and bolometers. Because of the variety of mass-spectroscopic methods, there is an equally wide range of techniques used in neutral cluster spectroscopy. One of the oldest among these involves electron-impact mass spectrometry of a cw neutral beam combined with vibrational predissociation spectroscopy using a tunable cw or pulsed laser. The advent of continuously tunable infrared sources (such as color center lasers and LiNbOa optical parametric oscillators) allowed for detailed studies of size and composition variation in neutral clusters. However, fragmentation of the clusters within the ionizer of the mass spectrometer, severely limited the identification of particular clusters with specific masses. Isotopic methods were able to mitigate some of the limitations, but only in a few cases. [Pg.86]

As for silicon, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) is the most widely used profiling analysis technique for deuterium diffusion studies in III-V compounds. Deuterium advantageously replaces hydrogen for lowering the detection limit. The investigations of donor and acceptor neutralization effects have been usually performed through electrical measurements, low temperature photoluminescence, photothermal ionization spectroscopy (PTIS) and infrared absorption spectroscopy. These spectroscopic investigations will be treated in a separated part of this chapter. [Pg.465]

The chapter IR Spectroscopic Techniques to Study Isolated Biomolecules gives an overview of some of the most common experimental practices currently in use to characterize the strucmre of isolated biomolecules by infrared spectroscopy. We address especially two main categories of experimental approaches conformation-selective infrared spectroscopy of jet-cooled neutral species and infrared (multiple-photon) dissociation spectroscopy of mass-selected ionized biomolecules. Molecular beam laser spectroscopy methods form the experimental basis for the topics covered in the sixth to eighth chapters. Mass spectrometry-based ion spectroscopy provided the experimental data for the studies reviewed in fourth and fifth chapters (and seventh inpart). [Pg.413]
