Neutralization flocculation

It should be noted that in all cases the size (and hence cost) of end-of-pipe treatment has a direct relationship to both the volume of effluent to be treated and the concentration of pollutants contained in the discharge. For example, the size of most physicochemical reactors (balancing, neutralizing, flocculation, sedimentation, flotation, oxidation, reduction, etc.) is determined by hydraulic factors such as surface loading rate and retention time. [Pg.2]

In some systems, such as lake and river waters, the suspended inorganic particles may be coated by biological polymers, termed humic substances, which prevent flocculation by either steric or electrostatic mechanisms. These can also interact with added inorganic salts (31) that can neutralize charged functional groups on these polymers. [Pg.33]

Coagulation involves neutralizing charged particles to destabilize suspended soflds. In most clarification processes, a flocculation step then follows. Flocculation starts when neutralized or entrapped particles begin to colUde and fuse to form larger particles. Polymeric flocculants are available in various chemical compositions and molecular weight ranges, and they may be nonionic in character or may have predominantly cationic or anionic charges. Scrubbers often convert an air pollution problem into a water pollution problem. If regulations require 100% recycling, the scrubber water may require flocculants or neutralizing chemicals or both. Waste Treatment. Figure 2 outlines the current waste recovery and treatment processes, and proposed changes. Acid waste streams are sent through nitric acid and secondary plutonium recovery processes before being neutralized with potassium hydroxide and filtered. This stream and basic and laundry waste streams are sent to waste treatment. During waste treatment, the actinides in the aqueous waste are removed by three stages of hydroxide-iron carrier-flocculant precipitation. A reduction in the electrical charge is known to increase the flocculation and coalescence rates. Sufficient high zeta potential (> — 30 mV) ensures a stable emulsion by causing repulsion of adjacent droplets. The selection of suitable surfactants can help to optimize droplet surface charges and thus enhance emulsion stability. Lipid particles with either positive or negative surface charges are more stable and are cleared from the bloodstream more rapidly than those with neutral charge [192, 193]. [Pg.277]
