Neuron migration

The early VN neurones migrate by various routes and in mammals become organised into two layers, each with distinct functional attributes (Chaps. 2 and 6). Amongst marsupials, the sensory cells of an opossum appear at about one-week post-conception (Jia and Halpem, 1998). Despite their extremely altricial developmental pattern, the bandicoots dendrites produce sensory processes (Fig. 4.5) on the lumenal border of the VNO at 35 days postnatal, which in the Northern Bandicoot (Isoodon macrourus) is about 50% of pouch life (Kratzing, 1986).

The neural tube is a pseudostratified epithelium, with cells extending between the apical and basal surfaces of the epithelial wall. The neuroepithelium contains undifferentiated populations of stem cells and radial glia (see Ch. 29). Several human genetic mutations exist that disrupt neuronal migration and cortical layer morphogenesis. These cause an arrest of the migration of cortical neurons, which produces various degrees of mental retardation and seizures (Gleeson and Walsh, 2000). 

A mutation in the reeler gene has recently been associated with autism (Keller et al., 2000). Mild abnormalities in cortical neuron migration and in reelin-containing cortical interneurons have been observed in the brains of schizophrenic subjects (Guidotti et ah, 2000). Therefore, a mutation in the reelin gene has also been implicated in schizophrenia. Changes in reelin have also been reported in the hippocampus in affective disorders (Eatemi et al., 2000).
