Neoplastic Lesions in Man and Animal Models

Aberrant Cell Proliferation as a Predisposing Factor in Colon Carcinogenesis 

Cell proliferation appears to play an important role in colon carcinogenesis in animal models (Barthold, 1983). Chronic injury to the colonic mucosa, leading to exaggerated proliferative activity, is a predisposing factor for early development and increased incidence of colon cancer. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn s Disease are the most common examples of this phenomenon (Lennard-Jones et al., 1977 Sherlock et aL, 1975).
