Aberrant Cell Proliferation as a Predisposing Factor in Colon Carcinogenesis [Pg.158]

Cell proliferation appears to play an important role in colon carcinogenesis in animal models (Barthold, 1983). Chronic injury to the colonic mucosa, leading to exaggerated proliferative activity, is a predisposing factor for early development and increased incidence of colon cancer. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn s Disease are the most common examples of this phenomenon (Lennard-Jones et al., 1977 Sherlock et aL, 1975). [Pg.158]
