An excess of zinc will cause problems in humans. Excessive doses can lead to biochemical control system damage, while doses slightly higher than optimal can cause disorders in iron and copper metabolism, resulting in incurable anemia, decrease in activity of zinc protein enzymes, and pancreas and kidney damage (Boularbah et ah, 1999 Seiler et ah, 1994). Increased levels of zinc have been observed in nuclei of neoplastic cells and in cases of acute dental caries, however its role in these diseases has not been explained. 

It has seemed pretty clear for several decades, from both studies in humans and in experimental settings, that carcinogenesis is a multistage process. At the broadest level, the process can be thought of as one in which a normal cell is first converted to a permanently deranged cell, which is called a neoplastic cell, and a second sequence in which the neoplastic cell develops into a tnmor, a neoplasm, that the pathologist can observe neoplastic conversion and neoplastic development. 

Four major types of genetic alterations that affect growth-controlling genes have been identified in neoplastic cells and are the basis of human cancers. 

Daunomycin and its analog adriamycin are in clinical use as potent antitumor agents in combination chemotherapy against acute lymphocytic leukemia. It has been suggested that the antitumor properties are associated with intercalation of the anthracycline ring of the antibiotic into the DNA of rapidly proliferating neoplastic cells and subsequent blocking of RNA synthesis (72-75). It has been previously emphasized that cancer chemotherapy involves a process of differential and selective toxicity. Agents are used that injure neoplastic cells and normal cells and the goal is to damage the neoplastic cells irreversibly and allow the normal cells and tissues to recover sooner. In addition, it is important to ameliorate the unpleasant side effects and to support the patient. Discussion of a few major toxicities is in order. 

Many conventional anticancer drugs display relatively poor selectivity for neoplastic cells, and solid tumors are particularly resistant both to radiation and to chemotherapy.
