Natural priorities list

What three criteria are used to place a hazardous waste site on the natural priorities list (NPL) ... 

The N Reactor site has 109 discrete sources of known environmental contamination. The nature and extent of this contamination, together with that found at the eight retired reactor sites on DOE s Hanford Site, formed the bases for Hanford s 100 Areas to be placed on the National Priority List (NPL) in accordance with regulations promulgated under authority of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) of 1980, as amended. 

Trihalomethanes (THMs) are priority pollutants listed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). They are recalcitrant in nature, thus their destruction is difficult. The most commonly encountered THMs in drinking water threatening human health are chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, and bromoform. Tang and Tassos (1997) studied the oxidation kinetics and mechanisms of these four THMs. 

The CWA has established discharge requirements for 129 individual toxic pollutants (VOCs, pesticides, metals and corrosives), known as priority pollutants, and conventional pollutants for 34 industrial categories (EPA, 1998b). Appendix 2 lists these pollutants, which are either individual chemicals or groups of chemicals of a similar nature. Aquatic toxicity testing and temperature measurements also often included into NPDES permits. 

For all these reasons, PCBs have been included in the list of priority pollutants, thus making their monitoring in the environment and studies of their toxic effects on living organisms of prime importance. Many different analytical procedures have consequently been developed, and their diversity relates to the nature of the matrix to be analysed (1, 15, 16). 

For this aim, three proficiency testing (PT) campaigns were organized within the SWIFT-WFD project, mainly dedicated to the determination of the list of priority pollutants annexed to the WFD. The SWIFT-WFD PT campaigns, one per year for three years, were organized on 17 reference materials (RMs) including 5 matrix RMs at natural concentration levels, 3 at low fortified concentration levels, 4 at fortified concentration levels, and 5 multi-analyte blind standard solutions, targeting the analysis of... 

The compound 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin is one of the most toxic priority pollutants on the US Environmental Protection Agency s list. Dioxin compounds act as nerve poisons and are extremely toxic. There is no lower limit at which dioxins are considered safe in natural environments.
