Natural polymers coating material

Shellac is the oldest known material that has been used as enteric coating material. However, as a natural material, it lacks a crucial quality criterion of more modern polymers (i.e., batch-to-batch reproducibility). Hence, the most commonly used polymers today are the synthetic methacrylate copolymers or semisynthetic derivatives of cellulose. The main structural element of these polymers is an acidic function (either phthalate or methacrylic acid), which is responsible for the pH-dependent dissolution. [Pg.16]

Emulsions and suspensions are colloidal dispersions of two or more immiscible phases in which one phase (disperse or internal phase) is dispersed as droplets or particles into another phase (continuous or dispersant phase). Therefore, various types of colloidal systems can be obtained. For example, oil/water and water /oil single emulsions can be prepared, as well as so-called multiple emulsions, which involve the preliminary emulsification of two phases (e.g., w/o or o/w), followed by secondary emulsification into a third phase leading to a three-phase mixture, such as w/o/w or o/w/o. Suspensions where a solid phase is dispersed into a liquid phase can also be obtained. In this case, solid particles can be (i) microspheres, for example, spherical particles composed of various natural and synthetic materials with diameters in the micrometer range solid lipid microspheres, albumin microspheres, polymer microspheres and (ii) capsules, for example, small, coated particles loaded with a solid, a liquid, a solid-liquid dispersion or solid-gas dispersion. Aerosols, where the internal phase is constituted by a solid or a liquid phase dispersed in air as a continuous phase, represent another type of colloidal system. [Pg.463]

Polymers are used frequently in paints and varnishes. These materials are usually filled with opaque materials and are difficult to separate or analyze by other procedures. Pyrolysis can be used to identify the nature of the paint, to measure quantitatively residual monomers, for quality control, and to examine additives [5, 13, 14]. Paints may contain a variety of polymers and copolymers such as vinyl derivatives, polyurethanes, phthalate polyesters, etc. Varnishes may contain various copolymers, siloxanes, etc. and can have a complex composition. This composition can be successfully analyzed using analytical pyrolysis. For example, the composition of a coating material consisting of the terpolymer poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-butyl acrylate-co-ethyl methacrylate) crosslinked with butoxy melamine resin has been analyzed with excellent results based on various monomer ratios resulting from pyrolysis at 590° C [15]. [Pg.172]

In the case of natural polymers, polysaccharides like cellulose and chitosan are widely studied as antimicrobial films and barrier/coating materials.
