Based on data of SRI International, the National Paint and Coatings Association (7) has reported the quantities of solvents used in manufacture of coatings, in thinning, in clean-up operations, and in dissolving resins supplied to the coatings industry (Table I). In 1981 the following quantities of solvents were used 955 million pounds of aliphatic hydrocarbons, 1215 of aromatic hydrocarbons, 1782 of oxygenated solvents, 21 of chlorinated solvents, and 34 of miscellaneous solvents.

The National Paint and Coating Association (NPCA) Label Guide and the Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS) are then presented. HMIS is the most comprehensive in-plant hazard communication program developed as a single total integrated system. 

First published by the National Paint and Coatings Association in 1972, the current 1979 Second Edition with Supplement No. One , 1981, of the Paint Industry Labeling Guide applies and extends the principles of ANSI 129.1-1976 to the products of the paint industry as these are used by both industrial customers and by home consumers.
